First record of Myocastor coypus (Molina 1782) (Mammalia, Rodentia) for the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, and its distribution in southern South America

Abstract: This study presents the first record of Myocastor coypus in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, in addition to detailing its distribution within southern South America, highlighting where it is considered native or exotic in Brazil. On April 23, 2018, at approximately 18:00, an adult specimen with a 40 cm BL (body length) was registered after being run over on a side road near wetlands and a dam in a rural area in the municipality of Bataguassu, eastern state of Mato Grosso do Sul. “…Capybaras are gregarious, and groups of over 100 individuals can occur in wetlands (Garcia & Bager, 2009;Silva, 2014). The nutria Myocastor coypus inhabits southern South America but has been extensively introduced into other continents (Peixoto-Couto et al, 2022). It weighs 5 to 9 kg (Ojeda et al, 2016;Waterkeyn et al, 2010;Figure 2d) and feeds mainly on aquatic plants, especially Poaceae (Colares et al, 2010).…”

Nutrias, also known as ratão-do-banhado and coypu (Peixoto-Couto et al, 2022;Woods et al, 1992), are gregarious and reside near water bodies, especially where embankments or earthen walls allow burrow construction (Garcia & Bager, 2009; F I G U R E 1 Study area with sites where capybara Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris and nutria Myocastor coypus faeces were sampled at Taim Ecological Station. Grey areas represent main water bodies and the Atlantic Ocean.…”

“…The nutria Myocastor coypus (Molina, 1782) is a Neotropical semiaquatic species that has herbivorous habits, distributed from Bolivia to southern Argentina and Chile (Woods et al 1992, Colares et al 2010, IUCN 2016). In Brazil, the species has its native distribution restricted to the southern, from the state of Paraná to the state of Rio Grande do Sul (Moojen 1952, Cherem et al 2004, IUCN 2016, Peixoto-Couto et al 2022. However, there are records of the species in the states of Rio de Janeiro (Bueno 2013), Mato Grosso do Sul (Peixoto-Couto et al 2022), and an introduction in São Paulo (De Vivo et al 2011).…”
