First record ofTriatoma barberiUsinger, 1939 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) in northern State of Mexico, Mexico

Abstract: Triatomines, also known as kissing bugs, are bloodfeeding insects in the subfamily Triatominae. They are important natural vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite that causes Chagas disease (Lent and Wygodzinsky 1979). A total of 151 species has been described in the world and assigned to fifteen genera (Justi and Galvão 2017). In Mexico, there are 32 triatomine species grouped into eight genera. Triatoma is the most abundant (19 species), followed by Meccus (6), Belminus (1), Dipetalogaster (1), Eratyrus (… Show more

“…It should be noted that T. barberi is considered the most important vector in Mexico (Guzmán‐Bracho ), with the ability to live above 2,000 m.a.s.l. and encountering high rates of natural infection (Ramsey et al , Becerril‐Flores et al , , Martínez‐Ibarra et al , Rivas et al ). Reports of this species in the state of Hidalgo are limited to the municipalities of Metztitlán, Tecozautla, and Alfajayucan, which exhibit considerable rates of infestation, colonization, and infection and are predominant collections in the intradomicile and peridomicile (Becerril‐Flores et al , ).…”

“…Both Triatoma barberi (Usinger) and Triatoma longipennis (Usinger) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) are considered important vectors of T. cruzi in Mexico, due to their presence in domestic and peridomestic habitats, their wide geographic distribution and their high infection rate (Brenière et al, 2010;Martinez-Hernandez et al, 2021;Rivas et al, 2018;Salazar Schettino et al, 2005). Similar to most reduviids, both species have five nymphal stages in addition to the adult stage, and males and females of all stages can be infected with T. cruzi, and transmit Chagas disease (Velásquez-Ortiz et al, 2022).…”

“…In French Guyana, records from Belminus laportei (Lent, Jurberg & Carcavallo, 1995) were added [23] increasing the number of species represented in this country to 11. Mexico is another example, with records of Triatoma rubida sonoriana being a new inclusion for all habitat types (domicile, peridomicile and sylvatic) [24]; new records of Triatoma barberi (Usinger, 1939) for Mexico state [25], as well as records of Triatoma rubida for Ocampo municipality and records of Triatoma gerstaeckeri (Stål, 1859) [26]. Records of some species were also updated in new Psammolestes tertius (Lent & Jurberg, 1965) in the states of Sergipe [30], Paraná [31] and Rio Grande do Norte [32] in Brazil, and of Cavernicola pilosa and Microtriatoma trinidadensis in Amazonas, Brazil [33,34].…”
