“…Pythium tracheiphilum Matta was first described in 1965 as a pathogen of lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L.) in Italy (Matta, 1965). Subsequently, it was reported infecting lettuce in the Netherlands (Blok & van der Plaats‐Niterink, 1978), then in North America, the United Kingdom, Australia, Spain and Argentina (González et al., 2004; Hall, 1989; Kiehr et al., 2015; Kumar et al., 2007; Nordskog et al., 2008). This species of Pythium is a soilborne oomycete that causes vein necrosis, stunting, wilting and root, stem and leaf rot in lettuce.…”

“…This is the first report of vascular necrosis caused by P. tracheiphilum on endive in Spain. This pathogen had previously been reported affecting endive in Italy (Sportelli 2007) and was also isolated in Australia from symptomatic plants of chicory, which is botanically closely related to endive, although no further studies to accomplish Koch's postulates were developed (Kumar et al 2007). In eastern Spain, where different vegetable species are intercropped in rotation every year, no vascular wilt incidence caused by P. tracheiphilum has been reported to date in crops other than lettuce or endive.…”

“…Among these, Pythium tracheiphilum Matta was first identified in 1965 to cause lettuce stem rot and vascular necrosis (Matta 1965). It was later identified in the Netherlands to be highly pathogenic to lettuce (Blok and van der Plaats-Niterink 1978) and subsequently reported in North America, the United Kingdom, and Australia (Hall 1989;Kumar et al 2007;Nordskog et al 2008). This is one of the very few Pythium spp.…”
