First Record of Aedes albopictus in Jordan

Abstract: The presence of Aedes albopictus in Jordan is reported for the 1st time based on collections of larvae and adults from 7 sites representing 3 governorates (Irbid, Ajloun, and Balqa). Adults were recovered from around houses, while larvae were collected from concrete reservoirs, water tanks for irrigation, small containers, and water barrels. Larvae of Ae. albopictus were found along with larvae of Culiseta longiareolata and Culex laticinctus.

“…Despite the absence of evidence of ZIKAV in Jordan, the risk of ZIKAV transmission in this region might be appreciated by the presence of documented imported cases of ZIKAV disease to the Middle East, and the detection of the transmitting mosquitoes in this region [6,7,23]. HCP play a critical role in population awareness regarding public health problems.…”

“…According to the Centers for Disease control and Prevention (CDC), Jordan is considered as a country with no mosquitoes (A. aegypti) that spread Zika [5]. Yet, recent evidence revealed the presence of A. albopictus in Jordan [6,7]. This species was also reported in other neighboring Middle Eastern countries such as Israel and Turkey [7].…”

“…8 In Jordan, A. albopictus has recently been reported in three governorates. 9 Although, A. aegypti was not reported in Jordan, north Jordan region is considered to have high predicted probability of A. aegypti occurrence; particularly, this species was detected in nearby countries such as Syria, Israel, and Lebanon. 8 In addition, the fact that ZIKAV can be sexually transmitted, and the disease is asymptomatic in 80% of the cases, 2 has drawn attention to the possibility of its transmission to areas with no risk of ZIKAV, such as the Middle East.…”

“…A. albopictus vectors of Zika virus were also reported in several Middle Eastern countries [13]. Although the CDC considered Jordan as a country with no mosquitoes ( A. aegypti) that spread Zika [11], A. albopictus has recently been reported in Jordan [14]. A. aegypti , although not reported in Jordan, was detected in neighboring countries, such as Syria, Israel, and Lebanon, and there is a high predicted probability of its occurrence in Northern Jordan [13].…”

“…Urbanization, globalization, and international mobility are the three major factors that have lately contributed in the overseas spread of epidemic arboviral diseases such as Zika [5]. The Middle East has experienced massive waves of these factors, not only due to its transcontinental location, but also due to the several intra-regional conflicts that occurred in the past few decades [14]. In Jordan, a Middle Eastern country, these factors created a dramatic urge of the Jordanian population to target the U.S. for migration, educational and professional purposes.…”
