First record of greater white‐toothed shrew Crocidura russula in Ireland

Abstract: 1. Skeletal remains of greater white-toothed shrew Crocidura russula were recovered from barn owl Tyto alba and kestrel Falco tinnunculus pellets collected at 15 locations in Counties Tipperary and Limerick in Ireland in September 2007 and March 2008. Seven greater whitetoothed shrews were trapped at four locations in Tipperary in March 2008. This is the first Irish record of C. russula and compelling evidence that the species is established in Ireland. 2.The absence of C. russula from earlier surveys of owl p… Show more

“…assuming June 1927 as the date of introduction). The point of introduction for the greater white-toothed shrew was unknown (Tosh et al 2008). Centroid analysis was performed using the Animal Movements extension to determine the centre of the greater whitetoothed shrew range, weighted by the density of all known records (i.e.…”

“…Thus, a total of 165 9 10 km squares were surveyed in a grid straddling the last known boundary of the bank vole range established in 2002 (Telfer et al 2005a) whilst also including the last known boundary of the greater white-toothed shrew range established in 2008 (Tosh et al 2008;Fig. 1a).…”

“…Mammal species which are present across Europe but are absent from Ireland include the microtine voles (Harris & Yalden 2008). However, the southern third of the island has been subject to the accidental introduction of two invasive small mammals, the Bank Vole Myodes glareolus (Claassens & O'Gorman 1965) and Greater Whitetoothed Shrew Crocidura russula (Tosh et al 2008). Where their ranges overlap, the negative effects of these invasive mammals on indigenous small mammals are cumulative and ultimately bring about species replacement (Montgomery et al 2012).…”

“…The greater white-toothed shrew ( Crocidura russula ) is an exotic species to Ireland first recorded in 2007[1], and now classified as an invasive mammalian species[2]. According to recent studies, this species is rapidly spreading with radial expansion estimates of approximately 5.5 km/yr[2].…”
