Dinoflagelados do gênero Ceratium são considerados invasores em águas doces da América do Sul. Desde os anos 2000, os registros em reservatórios têm se tornado frequentes, principalmente aqueles relacionados à C. furcoides. Este trabalho objetivou analisar a distribuição espacial e temporal (seca e chuva) de C. furcoides no Lago Paranoá, Distrito Federal, na fase inicial de sua colonização, relacionando os dados populacionais e morfológicos da espécie com variáveis limnológicas. As amostras foram coletadas a um metro de profundidade, em três pontos diferentes do Lago Paranoá (A, C e D), entre agosto de 2016 e agosto de 2017. A densidade foi mais alta durante os meses de setembro e outubro de 2016, com o valor máximo de 207 ind.mLno ponto de maior estado trófico no mês de outubro (Ponto A). Entretanto, não houve variação significativa da densidade na escala espacial nem temporal. O biovolume celular, porém, foi maior no período de seca. De modo geral, a densidade de C. furcoides esteve correlacionada positivamente com oxigênio dissolvido, pH, fósforo total e clorofila a, e negativamente com N-NH3. Já o biovolume celular correlacionou-se positivamente apenas com o N-NH3, e negativamente com temperatura, oxigênio dissolvido, pH e clorofila a. Análise de regressão linear mostrou relação negativa significativa entre a densidade e o biovolume celular. A ocorrência contínua de C. furcoides ao longo dos meses amostrados e nos três pontos estudados, mesmo em períodos de floração de cianobactérias, sinaliza seu avanço pela bacia hidrográfica do Paraná e o potencial de estabilização desta população no Lago Paranoá, reforçando a importância do seu monitoramento neste reservatório. Samples were collected at one meter depth, at three different sites of Lake Paranoá (A, C and D), from August 2016 to August 2017. Density was higher during September and October 2016, with the maximum value of 207 ind.mL-1 at the site with greater trophic status in October (site A). However, there was no significant variation among sites or months. Cell biovolume was higher during the dry season nevertheless. In general, density of C. furcoides was positively related to dissolved oxygen, pH, total phosphorus and chlorophyll a and negatively to N-NH3.

“…In Brazil, the species was recorded for the first time in the state of Minas Gerais in 2007, and its occurrence was considered to be rare (Santos-Wisniewski et al 2007, Oliveira et al 2011. However, C. furcoides has been recorded in rivers and reservoirs across several Brazilian basins in at least eight of the 26 states of this country, which indicates an ongoing expansion process (Matsumura-Tundisi et al 2010, Oliveira et al 2011, Amazonas et al 2012, M€ uller et al 2012, Nishimura 2012, Bressane et al 2013, Cavalcante et al 2013, Cortez 2013, Jati et al 2014, Moreira et al 2015. Dinoflagellates of the genus Ceratium are predominantly found in marine environments, with a few species in inland waters. Over the last decades, the freshwater species Ceratium hirundinella and Ceratium furcoides have colonized and invaded several South American basins. The purpose of this study was to create a distribution model for the invasive dinoflagellate C. furcoides in South America in order to further investigate the basins at potential risk, as well as the environmental conditions that influence its expansion. This species is known to develop blooms due to its mobility, resistance to sedimentation, and optimized use of resources. Although nontoxic, blooms of the species cause many problems to both the natural ecosystems and water users. Potential distribution was predicted by using a maximum entropy algorithm (MaxEnt). Model was run with 101 occurrences obtained from the scientific literature, and climatic, hydrological and topographic variables. The developed model had a very good performance for the study area. The most susceptible areas identified were mainly concentrated in the basins between southeastern Brazil and northeastern Argentina. Besides already affected regions, new potentially suitable areas were identified in temperate regions of South America. The information generated here will be useful for authorities responsible for water and watershed management to monitor the spread of this species and address problems related to its establishment in new environments.

A proxy for estimating the cell volume of Ceratium furcoides (Dinophyceae): basis for monitoring Brazilian reservoirs

Ceratium furcoides, a large bloom‐forming dinoflagellate, is considered an invasive species in South American freshwater systems. As it can cause ecological and economic problems, particularly in reservoirs, this issue has been discussed among researchers and companies responsible for monitoring Brazilian aquatic systems. To this end, although biovolume estimates are an important tool for ecological studies, calculating biovolumes is a cumbersome procedure, requiring a large number of samples and measurements. This study was undertaken to provide a simple measured morphological trait as a proxy for the cell volume of C. furcoides in Brazilian water systems that have been invaded by these organisms, exhibiting dense, recurrent blooms. Morphometric data were obtained monthly from two subtropical reservoirs in southern Brazil with public supply purposes. Cell volumes exhibited seasonal variations, with significant differences by months and seasons, although not between reservoirs or morphotypes with two or three antapical horns, meaning biovolume estimates must consider seasonal variations in dinoflagellate size. Body width was significantly correlated with 11 other measured dimensions of the cell and was highly correlated with cell volume, thereby being the most representative measure of cell volume. Linear regressions for estimating cell volumes from cell body width revealed a strong positive trend when both full sampling and seasonally grouped samples were considered. Morphometric data of C. furcoides invasions in other Brazilian subtropical and tropical waterbodies also were used, exhibiting significant correlation with the formula proposed in this study.
