First prototypes of vortex retarders obtained by polarization holography

Abstract: This paper will present the first prototypes of vortex retarders made of photo-orientable liquid crystals polymers recorded without mechanical action using only polarization holography. Vortex retarders are birefringent plates characterized by a uniform phase retard and a rotation of their fast axis along their center. Liquid crystals are anisotropic molecules possessing birefringent properties. They are locally orientable and their orientation defines the fast axis orientation of the retarder. Their alignment… Show more

“…It has been reported large inventory of work relating to the possibilities of manipulation of wave fronts via states of polarization using traditional diffraction elements. In particular, polarization controlled holographic vortex studied and developed by Piron could provide some new ideas for designing metasurface holograms [67][68][69][70][71].…”

“…15 Moreover, our components were installed on three infrared cameras: VLT-VISIR, VLT-NACO and LBT-LMIRCam. [16][17][18][19] The main advantage of the SG technology over other techniques such as Liquid Crystal Polymers (LCP) 20,21 or Photonic Crystals (PC) 22 is the bandwidth. LCP-and PC-VVCs can be affected by absorption at wavelengths beyond the near-infrared (H band centered at ~1.65µm, K band ~2.2µm).…”

“…Thanks to previous experimental work [1,14], it could be determined that the minimal acceptable eccentricity was dependent of the collimation of the recording setup. Indeed, improving the collimation allows a less directional electric field to properly align the polymers of the first layer.…”

“…In a previous paper [14], we defined an eccentricity limit e where a more circularly polarized beam is unable to properly align the LCs. Experimentally, it corresponds to the polarization obtained after a linear polarizer and a quarter-wave plate with a fast axis forming an angle of 43°with the incident Fig.…”
