First performance test of a 30 mm iron-based superconductor single pancake coil under a 24 T background field

Abstract: The iron-based superconductor (IBS) single pancake coil (SPC) with 30 mm inner diameter was firstly fabricated and tested under 24 T background field. This SPC was successfully made using the 7-filamentary Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (Ba122) tape by wind-andreact method. This IBS coil show the highest Ic value at magnetic field reported so far.For example, the transport critical current of this Ba122 SPC achieved 35 A at 4.2 K and 10 T, which is about half of that of short sample. This indicates that the noninsulation windi… Show more

“…In 2018, an IBS single pancake coil was firstly fabricated with Ba-122 superconducting tapes and tested under a 24 T background field ( Wang et al, 2019 ), then another single pancake coil and a double pancake coil were developed and tested at a 30 T background field ( Qian et al, 2021 ), showing very weak dependence of critical currents on such high magnetic field. In 2020, by using 100-meter 7-filament Ba-122 tapes provided by IEECAS, IBS racetrack coils were firstly fabricated at the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHEPCAS).…”

“…At present, a conceptual design study of 12 T dipole magnets is ongoing with the IBS technology to fulfill the requirements and need of a large-scale superconducting accelerator proposed by IHEPCAS ( The CEPC Study Group, 2018 ).
Figure 8 Iron-based superconducting coils Pancake coils ( Wang et al, 2019 ; Qian et al, 2021 ) and racetrack coils ( Zhang et al, 2021 ) were made with iron-based superconductors and their in-field critical currents, which show weak field dependence up to 30 T and 12 T, respectively.

“…High-T c superconducting (HTS) coils wound without insulation (NI coils) were first proposed by Hahn [1], and have many useful properties [2][3][4][5] and applications [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. Omitting insulation between the turns of the coil provides both current and heat with alternative pathways through the coil's structure.…”

“…Magnet R&D for IBS technology is developing [68][69][70][71] and IBS could likely prove an appealing alternative to ReBCO-based HTS. A rough price estimate for the SPPC IBS magnets is 200k RMB (or ∼28k CHF as of May 2021) per meter, roughly shared between the cost of the IBS conductor and the mechanical components of the magnet [72].…”
