The Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) presents global health challenges, with Brazil experiencing outbreaks since its introduction in 2014. In 2023, following a CHIKV outbreak in Minas Gerais (MG), social media was used to optimize an entomological survey aimed at identifying vectors and viral lineages and assessing insecticide resistance. Following Instagram posts, residents with suspected CHIKV infection were able to schedule mosquito aspirations. In total, 421 mosquitoes (165 Aedes aegypti and 256 Culex quinquefasciatus) were captured from 40 households in Salinas city (MG) and tested for the Dengue, Zika, and Chikungunya viruses through RT-qPCR. Twelve of 57 pools (10 Ae. aegypti and two Cx. quinquefasciatus) tested positive for CHIKV RNA. Viral RNA was also detected in the heads of nine Ae. aegypti, indicating viral dissemination but not in Cx. quinquefasciatus. Genome sequencing yielded the first near-complete genome from the 2023 outbreak, unveiling that the CHIKV strain belonged to the East/Central/South African (ECSA) genotype. Additionally, genetic analyses revealed high frequencies of kdr alleles, including in CHIKV-infected mosquitoes, suggesting resistance to pyrethroid insecticides in this Ae. aegypti population. Social media was important for guiding mosquito-capture efforts in CHIKV transmission hotspots, thus optimizing the opportunity for viral detection. These findings emphasize the urgent need for innovative vector studies and control strategies, as well as interdisciplinary approaches in public health interventions.

Background: The presence of Aedes albopictus in Bolivia has been a subject of controversy, lacking concrete documentation until now. Objectives: This study aimed to furnish evidence of Ae. albopictus presence in Bolivia. Methods: Larval breeding sites were sampled in two northern Bolivian localities, Rosario del Yata and San Agustin, both situated in the Beni department within the Vaca Diez province and Guayaramerin Municipio, approximately 10 km apart. Mosquito larvae collected underwent rearing to L4 and adult stages for morphological identification, with some specimens sequenced for confirmation.Findings: Ae. albopictus was identified in multiple breeding sites in both localities, confirming its establishment in the area. This marks the first concrete documentation of the species in Bolivia. The collections (larvae and adults) have been deposited in the Medical Entomology Laboratory of the Universidad Mayor de San Simón in Cochabamba, Bolivia, and the Laboratory of Entomology of the Instituto Nacional de Laboratorios de Salud of the Ministry of Health in La Paz, Bolivia. Main conclusion: Acknowledging its role as a vector for arboviruses like dengue and Chikungunya, Ae. albopictus should be incorporated into the Bolivian National Program of Vector Control for monitoring.

Aedes albopictus es una de las especies invasoras con mayor potencial de dispersión geográfica. Su origen es asiático, pero dada su importancia epidemiológica en la transmisión de arbovirus, se hace primordial determinar su rango de distribución, y una manera de hacerlo es mediante vigilancia entomológica, como la que se realiza en las áreas de influencia de las centrales hidroeléctricas de EPM en el departamento de Antioquia (Colombia), la cual fue concebida como una estrategia de detección temprana de vectores. El presente estudio buscó rastrear la presencia de Ae. albopictus en municipios de influencia de las hidroeléctricas Porce II y Porce III, determinar los hábitats de cría más frecuentes y actualizar la distribución en Colombia. El estudio comprendió dos enfoques: 1. Muestreo de adultos (peridomicilio y extradomicilio) y de larvas (sitios de cría naturales y artificiales), y 2. Revisión bibliográfica con el fin de actualizar la distribución de la especie en el país. Se recolectaron 107 ejemplares, 33 adultos (siete machos y 26 hembras) y 74 larvas, siendo las llantas el hábitat de cría de mayor importancia. Se registra por primera vez la presencia de Ae. albopictus en los municipios de Amalfi, Anorí, Gómez Plata, Guadalupe y Tarazá en Antioquia y se actualiza la presencia de la especie en 339 municipios de 23 departamentos en Colombia. Estos resultados aportan información sobre la presencia de Ae. albopictus en centrales hidroeléctricas, permitiendo a las autoridades sanitarias diseñar estrategias oportunas y adecuadas para la vigilancia, prevención y control de arbovirosis en el país.
