We investigate the sensitivity of the FASERν detector to new physics in the form of non-standard neutrino interactions. FASERν, which has recently been installed 480 m downstream of the ATLAS interaction point, will for the first time study interactions of multi-TeV neutrinos from a controlled source. Our formalism -which is applicable to any current and future neutrino experiment -is based on the Standard Model Effective Theory (SMEFT) and its counterpart, Weak Effective Field Theory (WEFT), below the electroweak scale. Starting from the WEFT Lagrangian, we compute the coefficients that modify neutrino production in meson decays and detection via deep-inelastic scattering, and we express the new physics effects in terms of modified flavor transition probabilities. For some coupling structures, we find that FASERν will be able to constrain interactions that are two to three orders of magnitude weaker than Standard Model weak interactions, implying that the experiment will be indirectly probing new physics at the multi-TeV scale. In some cases, FASERν constraints will become comparable to existing limits -some of them derived for the first time in this paper -already with 150 fb −1 of data.

Neutrinos from a particle collider have never been directly detected. FASER at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is designed to detect such neutrinos for the first time and study their cross sections at TeV energies-at present, no such measurements are available at such high energies. In 2018, during LHC Run 2, we installed a pilot detector 480-m downstream of the ATLAS interaction point. In this pilot run, proton-proton collision data of 12.2 fb −1 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV were collected. We observed the first candidate vertices, which were consistent with neutrino interactions. A 2.7 excess of neutrino-like signal above the background was measured. This milestone opens a new avenue for studying neutrinos at the existing and future high-energy colliders. During LHC Run 3, which will commence in 2022, we will deploy an emulsion detector with a target mass of 1.1 tons, coupled with the FASER magnetic spectrometer. This will yield ∼2,000 , ∼6,000 , and ∼40 interactions in the detector. Herein, we present the status and plan of FASER and report neutrino detection in the 2018 data.

We investigate the observed muon deficit in air shower simulations when compared to ultrahighenergy cosmic ray (UHECR) data. Based upon the observed enhancement of strangeness production in high-energy hadronic collisions reported by the ALICE Collaboration, the concomitant π ↔ K swap is considered as the keystone to resolve the muon anomaly through its corresponding impact on the shower development. We construct a toy model in terms of the π ↔ K swapping probability F s . We present a parametrization of F s in terms of the pseudorapidity that can accommodate the UHECR data. Looking to the future, we explore potential strategies for model improvement using the massive amounts of data to be collected by LHC neutrino detectors, such as FASERν and experiments at the Forward Physics Facility. We calculate the corresponding sensitivity to F s and show that these experiments will be able to probe the model phase space.
