First molecular detection of Haemoproteus spp. and Plasmodium spp. in eared doves (Zenaida auriculata) in Brazil

Abstract: The aim of this study was to verify the presence and identify the species of haemosporidian parasites in eared doves (Zenaida auriculata) in Brazil. Two hundred and eleven male and female eared doves were trap-captured in four different regions of Londrina city, in southern Brazil. Whole blood was collected in EDTA tubes through heart puncture after euthanasia in a CO2 chamber. A nested PCR targeting the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (cyt b) of Haemoproteus spp./Plasmodium spp. was performed, followed by an … Show more

“…In general, few researches have been documented into the prevalence of avian haemoparasites in poultry species in certain parts of Nigeria [20,21] and other developing countries [22,23] . The most recent research focused on the identification of avian haemoparasites in wild birds [18,24,25] . Studies of the genera of haemoparasites infecting village chicken in Nigeria, particularly in the northeastern region, remain fragmentary and scarce, hence the need to conduct the present study.…”
