First Mitochondrial Genome from Nemouridae (Plecoptera) Reveals Novel Features of the Elongated Control Region and Phylogenetic Implications

Abstract: The complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Nemoura nankinensis (Plecoptera: Nemouridae) was sequenced as the first reported mitogenome from the family Nemouridae. The N. nankinensis mitogenome was the longest (16,602 bp) among reported plecopteran mitogenomes, and it contains 37 genes including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes and two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. Most PCGs used standard ATN as start codons, and TAN as termination codons. All tRNA genes of N. nankinensis could … Show more

“…Generally, an animal mitogenome is a double-stranded circular molecule, ranging from 14 to 20 kb in length and containing a typical set of 37 genes, including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes (Taanman 1999). Functional information on replication derived from the related genomic structures has been well investigated, but the transcription features of animal mitogenomes are still limited (Chen and Du 2017). Here, we sequenced and assembled the mitogenome of S. mutilans and compared its genome to seven other representative centipede mitogenomes derived from Scolopendromorpha, Geophilomorpha, Lithobiomorpha, and Scutigeromorpha.…”

“…Insect mitogenomes are closed-circular molecules of approximately 16 kb in length, with 37 genes and a noncoding A + T-rich region [32][33][34][35][36]. Mitogenomes have been widely utilized to analyze population genetics, phylogeography, and molecular phylogenetics at different taxonomic levels [37][38][39][40].…”

“…The phylogenetic position of the family Nemouridae has been performed based on morphological or mitochondrial genome data previously, while there are still many different viewpoints to date (Zwick 2000;Du 2017, 2018;Wang et al 2019). Two mitochondrial genomes of genus Nemoura have been reported previously (Chen and Du 2017;, we sequenced and assembled the complete mitochondrial genome of N. meniscata from Longyuwan, Henan Province, China (33.699 N, 111.809 E) with the GenBank accession number MN944386 by using the highthroughput sequencing method in this study. The male specimen with the number VHL-0042 was collected on 15 May 2016 by Weihai Li and Junchao Wang.…”
