First measurements of electron vorticity in the foreshock and solar wind

Abstract: Abstract. We describe the methodology used to set up and compute spatial derivatives of the electron moments using data acquired by the Plasma Electron And Current Experiment (PEACE) from the four Cluster spacecraft. The results are used to investigate electron vorticity in the foreshock. We find that much of the measured vorticity, under nominal conditions, appears to be caused by changes in the flow direction of the return (either reflected or leakage from the magnetosheath) and strahl electron populations a… Show more

“…The numerical method used to estimate the electron moments and algorithm used to compute the spatial derivatives of the fluid velocity have been covered in detail in Gurgiolo et al (2010). That paper also includes discussions on possible sources of error and limitations associated with the results of the computations -we refer the reader there for details.…”

“…One problem not addressed in Gurgiolo et al (2010) because it did not present a major concern in the solar wind upstream of the magnetosphere is the effect of the Active Spacecraft Potential Control experiment (ASPOC). ASPOC uses an ion emitter to reduce the spacecraft potential.…”

“…This general 'curlometer' technique has also been used to study, for example, mirror mode structures (Lucek et al 2001). Detailed discussions of the procedure as applied to currents and vorticity can be found in Chanteur (1998) and Gurgiolo et al (2010Gurgiolo et al ( , 2011.…”

“…The numerical method used to estimate the electron moments has been presented in detail in Gurgiolo et al (2010), and we refer interested readers to that publication. It should be noted that to ensure that the moments derived on each spacecraft cover the same energy range for the entire time interval analyzed, the lower energy limits used in the integrals are set to the highest lower energy measurable after correcting for the spacecraft potential, while the lower velocity limit is set to the minimum upper energy measured on the four spacecraft.…”
