First Measurement of Muon Neutrino Charged Current Quasielastic (CCQE) Double Differential Cross Section

Abstract: Abstract. Using a high statistics sample of muon neutrino charged current quasielastic (CCQE) events, we report the first measurement of the double differential cross section ( d 2 σ dT µ d cos θ µ ) for this process. The result features reduced model dependence and supplies the most complete information on neutrino CCQE scattering to date. Measurements of the absolute cross section as a function of neutrino energy (σ [E QE,RFG ν ]) and the single differential cross section ( dσ dQ 2 QE ) are also provided, la… Show more

“…Because the beam intensity was high and the mass of the detector was large, this experiment accumulated more than a hundred thousand neutrino and anti-neutrino events from 2002 to 2012. MiniBooNE measured CCQE [25,26], CC1π differential cross sections [27,28], and also the corresponding NC channels [29,30]. Their results corroborated the muon forward suppression observed in K2K and MINOS, and a number of interactions significantly larger than expected from the theoretical predictions with the nominal theoretical parameters, i.e.…”

“…Fixing the flux normalization with HARP's pion-production data, the MiniBooNE collaboration has presented their first, preliminary absolutely normalized total, differential and double differential cross sections for CCQE at this conference and finds an excess of about 35% compared to the total cross section measured at NOMAD, ANL and BNL [3]. We strongly emphasize that these absolute cross sections depend directly on the pion background subtraction which again is based on the Monte Carlo prediction (cf., Ref.…”

“…GENIE has been built up from models of the most important physical scattering neutrino-nucleon mechanisms for the SBN and DUNE energy regimes (0.5-5 GeV): quasielastic (QE) scattering ν N → − N , ν N , resonance production (RES) ν N → − R, ν R , and non-resonant multihadron production referred to as deep inelastic scattering (DIS): ν N → − X, ν X [11,12]. The underlying neutrinonucleon scattering processes receive significant modification from the nuclear environment, including the effects of Fermi motion of target nucleons, many-nucleon effects, and final state interactions (FSI) [13].…”

“…In addition to the observed CPMD, kinematic properties of all charged particle tracks for each multiplicity can be examined. Determination of inclusive event properties such as the CPMD and of individual track kinematic properties at Fermilab BNB neutrino energies naturally fits into the modern strategy [11,12] of presenting neutrino interaction measurements in the form of directly observable quantities.…”
