Microplastics are a form of new pollution that the Indonesian people are not aware of. The factors for the entry of microplastics into pond waters are water sources, anthropogenic activities, and pond cleanliness. The purpose of this study was to determine the abundance of microplastics, the color and shape of microplastics, and the types of microplastic polymers found in sediment, water, and the digestive tract of milkfish (Chanos chanos) in Sidoarjo ponds. The average abundance of microplastics in sediment samples obtained from semi-intensive ponds is 300 particles per 50 grams, while the sediment samples from traditional ponds are 613 particles per 50 grams. The average abundance of microplastics in the semi-intensive pond water samples was 2.1 particles per 20 liters and in traditional ponds was 2.3 particles per 20 liters. The average abundance of microplastics in the milkfish (Chanos chanos) samples from the Semi-Intensive Pond was as many as 6 particles per tail, while the Traditional Pond had 9.5 particles per tail. In this study, four colors of microplastics were found, namely blue, black, red, and transparent, while the microplastics obtained were fiber, fragment, and filament. The types of microplastic polymers encountered in this study were dominated by polyamide or nylon polymers. In sediment samples from both ponds, we found the presence of Polyamide or Nylon polymers, namely Polystyrene and Polyamide or Nylon, and in the digestive tract of milkfish (Chanos chanos), namely Polyamide or Nylon.

Microplastics are widespread in freshwater environments and could impact these ecosystems. Bivalves are freshwater organisms that are particularly exposed to microplastic contamination. Therefore, in this preliminary study, the accumulation of microplastics, plasticizers, and additives in the freshwater bivalves Anodonta cygnea was investigated through active biomonitoring. Specimens bought commercially were exposed in three rivers in Central Italy for different exposure times: short (1 month) and long (3 months). The gills and the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) were analyzed separately to evaluate the possible uptake and ingestion of particles via Micro-FTIR. For the first time, small microplastics (SMPs, 5–100 µm), plasticizers, additives, and other micro-litter components, e.g., natural and non-plastic synthetic fibers (APFs), were identified in the bivalve A. cygnea. The most abundant polymer in the gills (94.4%) and in the GITs (66.1%) was polyamide, which had the highest concentration in each river. A decrease in SMPs’ abundance was observed over time in the gills in each river, while the abundance in the GIT increased. Compared to polymers, a greater variety of APFs was observed in rivers. The APFs changed during the time of exposure and between different rivers more evidently than polymers, allowing for a clearer identification of the possible sources. These results highlighted the plastic pollution caused by SMPs using freshwater bivalves as sentinel organisms and the need to further investigate the additives that can be proxies of the presence of microplastics in the environment and biota.

Indonesia is among the largest fish-producing countries. The West Nusa Tenggara (WNT) region is one of the highest producers of fish in Indonesia. Hence, the levels of MP contamination in commercial fish should be assessed to ensure food safety, food security, and socio-economic sustainability. This study investigates MP contamination in commercial fish in one of the largest fish markets in the WNT region, the Bintaro fish market. Three commercial fish species were evaluated for MP contamination in this study, Nasso thynnoides, Auxis rochei, and Caesio teres. The highest number of MPs was detected in A. rochei (21.60 ± 8.70 MPs/100 g). The other pelagic fish species, N. thynnoides, also shown considerably high MP contamination (18.17 ± 7.93 MPs/100 g). On the other hand, the midwater fish Caesio teres showed the least MP contamination (7.07 MPs/100 g). In addition, most of the MPs detected in all three fish species were fiber MPs of small sizes (100–500 µm). Based on FTIR analyses, the MP samples from all three fish species mainly consisted of polyamide (PA), which is the polymer used to form fiber for textiles. These results potentially reveal the degree of microplastic pollution in not only coastal areas of WNT, but also Sulawesi and also East Nusa Tenggara (ENT) since the fish distributed at the Bintaro fish market came from these regions. Better solid waste management in Indonesia is needed to reduce plastic waste management, particularly household waste, which is the potential major source of fiber MPs.
