A new insular species of Paraethomys (Muridae, Rodentia) with medium-sized hypsodont teeth is described from the Zanclean of Mallorca (Balearic Islands, western Mediterranean). The m1 displays the most distinctive traits: hypsodonty, a high occurrence of an unusual anterior cingulum, a well-developed labial cingulum, high accessory labial cuspids resembling the Apodemus pattern and a funnel between c1 and the hypoconid. Paraethomys balearicus sp. nov. preserves traits close to those present in the earliest populations of Paraethomys meini from the upper Turolian, such as a developed posterior spur on t3 in the M1, a connection between t4 and t8 in the M1, a narrow connection between t6 and t9 in the M1 and the occasional presence of an individualized t9 and a t12 in some M2s. The relationship between the new taxon and its direct mainland ancestor gives additional support to a Messinian origin for the so-called Myotragus fauna, which became isolated after the refilling of the Mediterranean Sea 5.33 Ma ago. The absence of Paraethomys in other known younger Mallorcan sites suggests that its extinction most probably occurred at an indeterminate time during the Pliocene Epoch.

Aim The Messinian salinity crisis (MSC) was an extraordinary geological event that affected the whole Mediterranean region as well as the global marine circulation between 5.97 and c. 5.33 Ma. One of its most direct effects was the emersion of land masses and the subsequent establishment of land bridges that led to common terrestrial faunal exchanges. However, the details of the onset of these exchanges have been a matter of controversy. New findings from southern Iberia of small mammal remains with African similarities have enabled us to review the Messinian faunal exchanges in the Mediterranean region. Location Mediterranean region.Methods Small mammal remains with African similarities from two new southern Iberian sites were studied. The small mammal associations of eight Miocene-Pliocene North African sites were also reviewed.Results Two taxa with African similarities were identified at the Iberian study sites: Debruijnimys almenarensis and a Ruscinomys-like form (cf. Ruscinomys) with a strong spur in the lingual lobe of the anterocone in the M 1 , a feature observed in North African Ruscinomys and eastern Mediterranean Byzantinia. The taxonomic status of some North African species and/or genera, such as Castillomys, Occitanomys and Prolagus, should be revised according to the new phylogenetic relationships established in European faunas.Main conclusions Two hypotheses can be proposed for the origin of the African Ruscinomys: (1) among the Iberian Ruscinomys or (2) from the eastern Mediterranean Byzantinia. Our data, currently from only a few, albeit significant, taxa, tend to support an Iberian origin. The discussion presented in this paper suggests an age near the closure of the last Betic Gateway (c. 6.18 Ma) for the first small mammal exchange between Africa and Europe, as well as a single migratory wave of small mammals, filtered by their ecological preferences from this point until the end of the MSC.

In this paper a magnetostratigraphically calibrated biozonation of the Miocene–Pliocene continental record of the Guadix–Baza Basin (south‐eastern Spain) is presented. This biozonation is based on a rodent succession which ranges from the latest Miocene (c. 6 Ma) to the latest Pliocene (c. 2.6 Ma). A total of nine biozones have been defined for the late Miocene and Pliocene, all of them based on the range or concurrent‐range of rodent species: Apodemus gudrunae – Apocricetus alberti Zone, Apocricetus barrierei Zone, Paraethomys aff. abaigari Zone, Trilophomys Zone, Mimomys davakosi Zone, Dolomys adroveri Zone, Mimomys hassiacus Zone, Mimomys polonicus Zone and Kislangia ischus Zone. A magnetobiostratigraphical correlation has been established between these biozones and the standard ATNTS scale, on the basis of the palaeomagnetic analysis carried out on the sections of Negratín, Botardo‐1 and Gorafe. The correlation has been completed with previous palaeomagnetic analysis in the sections of Galera and Zújar. The magnetobiostratigraphical correlation here established indicates a late Messinian age for the Apodemus gudrunae – Apocricetus alberti Zone, a Zanclean age for the Apocricetus barrierei, Paraethomys aff. abaigari, Trilophomys and Mimomys davakosi zones and a Piazencian age for the Mimomys hassiacus, Mimomys polonicus and Kislangia ischus zones. The Dolomys adroveri Zone is mostly Zanclean in age, but its uppermost part belongs to the Piazencian. Therefore, unit MN13 is correlated with the late Messinian, MN14 is correlated with the early Zanclean, most of MN15 is correlated with the late Zanclean, while the uppermost part of MN15 and MN16 are correlated with the Piazencian.
