First DNA barcoding of a new alien species Glycaspis brimblecombei Moore, 1964 (Hemiptera: Aphalaridae) in Croatia with a distribution note

Abstract: A new alien psyllid Glycaspis brimblecombei, native in Australia, was first discovered in Croatia in 2020. Its presence was also confirmed in the Botanical Garden of the Institute for Marine and Coastal Research (University of Dubrovnik) on the island of Lokrum, using DNA barcoding. Distribution and spreading of this alien species were noted as across the other continents so in Europe. The pest is considered as a threat to forestry, paper industry and could affect ornamental values of the eucalyptus species. I… Show more

“…According to literature, five alien species from superfamily Psylloidea were already reported from Croatia: A. jamatonica (Seljak, 2003;Seljak et al, 2004), Cacopsylla fulguralis (Kuwayama, 1908) (Šimala and Masten, 2003;Šimala et al, 2006), Cacopsylla pulchella (Löw, 1877) (Pintar et al, 2018;Pernek et al, 2020), Ctenarytaina eucalypti (Maskell, 1890) (Šimala et al, 2006) and Glycaspis brimblecombei Moore, 1964 (Pintar et al 2020;Kolar et al, 2021). Two previously unrecorded species were identified during this survey: A. uncatoides and A. acaciaebaileyanae.…”

“…Exotic pests reduce the productivity of these plants. The red gum lerp psyllid Glycaspis brimblecombei (Moore, 1964) (Hemiptera: Aphalaridae) is a sucking insect of Australian origin (Kolar, et al, 2021). The reduction and deformation of the leaf blade, of the photosynthetic area, premature leaf fall, overgrowth, pointer drought and, in cases of continuous attacks, plant death, characterize its damage (Dal-Pogetto et al, 2022).…”
