First detection of SARS-CoV-2 genetic material in the vicinity of COVID-19 isolation centre through wastewater surveillance in Bangladesh

Abstract: In the course of a COVID-19 pandemic, 0.33 million people got infected in Bangladesh, we made the first and successful attempt to detect SARS-CoV-2 viruses' genetic material in the vicinity wastewaters of an isolation centre i.e. Shaheed Bhulu Stadium, situated at Noakhali. The idea was to understand the genetic loading variation, both temporal and distance-wise in the nearby wastewater drains when the number of infected COVID-19 patients is not varying much. Owing to the fact that isolation center, in general… Show more

“…Human respiratory-related infections (RTIs) are known as the most familiar human infections, while ARIs are found in the upper and lower side of respiratory tract. The population compactness of Bangladesh is 1,265 sq/km with a total of 165 million as of 04 July 2022 ( 56 , 59 ). Of the study households, solid fuel (i.e., coal/lignite, charcoal, wood, straw/shrubs/grass, agricultural crops, and animal dung) is the most widely used fuel for cooking in Bangladesh.…”

“…The most frequently used primers target N genes, which are also recommended by the CDC [ 77 ]. RNA SARS-CoV-2 was detected in wastewater worldwide such as in Europe [ 21 , 23 , 31 , 32 , 41 , 50 , 52 , 74 ], Asia [ 32 , 55 , 71 , 72 , 73 , 75 ], America [ 48 , 76 ], and Australia [ 49 ].…”

“…[156], Kuryntseva et al [123], Fangaro et al [59], Betancourt et al [161] and Colosi et al [155], among others, have proposed epidemiological models and analyses of growth rates according to the study area and temporalities. These proposed models and methodologies have made it possible to understand the continuity, behaviour and growth of the virus in a given population [56,193,194]. Additionally, this kind of study provides reliable information on the behaviour of the virus in asymptomatic patients and allows researchers to determine the number of undiagnosed infections in a population [192].…”
