“…However, since 2015, multiple countries have inter-regional spread and bla OXA-48 is endemic in Malta and Turkey [ 147 ]. Further afield, extensively drug resistant (XDR) strains co-harbouring bla NDM and bla OXA-48 have been identified in the Middle East [ 177, 178 ], and bla OXA-48 strains have emerged in Canada [ 173 ], Algeria [ 179 ] and Korea [ 180 ]. Shewanella spp.…”

“…Indeed, various studies on OXA-48-like-producing Enterobacteriaceae have been published in Algeria, involving clinical strains recovered from various hospitals located in different regions in Algeria including outbreaks [6] , [7] , from companion and wild animals, river water and from fresh vegetables [7] . More recently, the bla OXA-48 gene has also been detected in Algerian community [5] . The OXA-48-producing E. cloacae isolate identified in the current study was shown to belong to the sequence type 108.…”

“…Thus, carbapenems have become among the last-resort drugs in the treatment of severe infections caused by these bacteria. Unfortunately, widespread use of carbapenems has led to the emergence of carbapenem-resistant GNB [5] , [6] .…”

“…In this study, the sampled areas were located in environments with a high human population, close to hospitals and wastewater, known reservoirs of antibiotic-resistance genes, where the birds can access water and food that is contaminated with pharmaceutical products such as antibiotics. In this context and in the same city where our study was conducted, the first detection of the p bla OXA-48 gene was described in 2014 at Batna university hospital, then from migratory birds, community-acquired infection, currency, and more recently from hospital wastewater [ 20 , 21 , 42 , 43 , 44 ], suggesting that the detected genes in pigeon are related to their feeding mode in different locations including hospitals and wastewater or by contact with other birds such as migratory birds. From pigeons, only two studies have reported the detection of carbapenemase-producing Gram-negative bacteria worldwide.…”
