The mosquito Aedes albopictus was detected for the first time in Tunisia in 2018. With its establishment in the capital city of Tunis, local health authorities fear the introduction of new human arboviral diseases, like what happened in Europe with unexpected local cases of chikungunya, dengue and Zika. Even though this mosquito is competent to transmit the arboviruses mentioned above, the transmission level will vary depending on the couple, mosquito population and virus genotype. Here, we assessed the vector competence of Ae . albopictus Tunisia by experimental infections with chikungunya (CHIKV), dengue (DENV), and Zika (ZIKV) viruses. We found that Ae . albopictus Tunisia was highly competent for CHIKV (transmission efficiency of 25% at 21 post-infection) and to a lesser extent, for ZIKV (8.7%) and DENV (8.3%). Virus was detected in mosquito saliva at day 3 (CHIKV), day 10 (ZIKV) and day 21 (DENV) post-infection. These results suggest that the risk of emergence of chikungunya is the highest imposing a more sustained surveillance to limit Ae . albopictus populations in densely populated urban dwellings and at the entry points of travelers returning from CHIKV-endemic regions.

Background Many countries, including Rwanda, have mosquito monitoring programmes in place to support decision making in the fight against malaria. However, these programmes can be costly, and require technical (entomological) expertise. Involving citizens in data collection can greatly support such activities, but this has not yet been thoroughly investigated in a rural African context. Methods Prior to the implementation of such a citizen-science approach, a household entomological survey was conducted in October–November 2017 and repeated one year later in Busoro and Ruhuha sectors, in southern and eastern province of Rwanda, respectively. The goal was to evaluate the perception of mosquito nuisance reported by citizens as a potential indicator for malaria vector hotspots. Firstly, mosquito abundance and species composition were determined using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) light traps inside the houses. Secondly, household members were interviewed about malaria risk factors and their perceived level of mosquito nuisance. Results Tiled roofs, walls made of mud and wood, as well as the number of occupants in the house were predictors for the number of mosquitoes (Culicidae) in the houses, while the presence of eaves plus walls made of mud and wood were predictors for malaria vector abundance. Perception of mosquito nuisance reported indoors tended to be significantly correlated with the number of Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (s.l.) and Culicidae collected indoors, but this varied across years and sectors. At the village level, nuisance also significantly correlated with An. gambiae s.l. and total mosquito density, but only in 2018 while not in 2017. Conclusions Perception of mosquito nuisance denoted in a questionnaire survey could be used as a global indicator of malaria vector hotspots. Hence, involving citizens in such activities can complement malaria vector surveillance and control.

Dans le but d’améliorer nos connaissances sur la diversité spécifique de la faune Culicidienne au niveau de la région de Tizi-Ouzou (Nord d’Algérie), nous avons mené un échantillonnage bimensuel dans 20 gîtes larvaires différents au cours d’une période allant du mois de février 2019 jusqu’au mois de juin 2020. Treize (13) espèces ont été recensées (Aedes (Ochlerotatus) caspius (Pallas, 1771), Aedes (Finlaya) geniculatus (Olivier, 1791), Anopheles maculipennis s.l. Meigen, 1818, Anopheles (Anopheles) claviger (Meigen, 1804), Culex (Culex) pipiens Linnaeus,1758, Culex (Maillotia) deserticola Kirkpatrick, 1925, Culex (Maillotia) hortensis Ficalbi, 1889, Culex (Neoculex) impudicus Ficalbi, 1890, Culex (Neoculex) territans Walker,1856, Culex (Culex) perexiguus (Theobald, 1903), Culiseta (Allotheobaldia) longiareolata (Macquart, 1838), Culiseta (Culiseta) subochrea (Edwards, 1921), Uranotaenia (Pseudoficalbia) unguiculata (Edwards,1913) appartenant à cinq genres (Aedes, Anopheles, Culex, Culiseta, Uranotaenia). Culex pipiens est l’espèce la plus abondante avec une fréquence relative de 44,53%, suivie par Culiseta longiareolata avec 41,96%.
