First detection in Europe of the metallo-β-lactamase IMP-15 in clinical strains of Pseudomonas putida and Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Abstract: In a prospective study (2009-2011) in healthcare institutions from the Canary Islands (Spain), 6 out of 298 carbapenem non-susceptible Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates produced a metallo-β-lactamase: four IMP-15, two VIM-2 (including one IMP-15-positive isolate) and one VIM-1. Multilocus sequence typing identified the single VIM-1-producing isolate as clone ST111 and two IMP-15-producing isolates as ST606, but, strikingly, bacterial re-identification revealed that the other three isolates (producing IMP-15 and/… Show more

“…Studies state higher rate (46%) of VIM positive strains of this group from human specimens [1]. Furthermore, these species have been described as reservoirs for the dissemination of the antibiotic resistance genes to the more pathogenic species such as P. aeruginosa [13][14][15]. P. fulva is the less characterized member of this group which has scarcely been demonstrated as human pathogen.…”

“…Likewise, the involved mutation-driven and horizontally acquired resistance mechanisms of these strains were previously characterized in detail (19,32). Additionally, the study included a panel of 20 (8,14,17,18,(33)(34)(35). In cases where they were unknown, genotypes were documented through multilocus sequence typing (MLST) using previously described schemes, protocols, available databases, and tools (36; http://pubmlst.org/paeruginosa).…”
