“…Eurasian Griffon Vultures combine soaring on thermals to gain height, alternating with periods of gliding for displacing (Spaar 1997). The use of thermals has also been reported to account for higher flying activity at midday in a number of raptor species (Spaar 1997, García-Ripollés et al 2010.…”

“…Six birds were captured on April 2007 and two birds were captured on October 2009 in a vulture restaurant (40°33'N, 0°13'W) located in the Cinctorres district (Castellón province, East of Spain), using a remotely activated cage built ad hoc. In all cases, a Microwave Telemetry's 70g solar-powered GPS-PTT was fixed to their backs using a Teflon harness sewed with a cotton ribbon to allow birds to lose the harness after the end of the PTT's life cycle (García-Ripollés et al 2010). The PTTs were programmed to record one GPS position per hour from 07:00 to 21:00 hours (local time) for the whole annual period.…”

“…The wintering home range used by the A. clanga was only 10 km 2 , which is much smaller than suspected (without satellite tracking) for the breeding home range (Cramp & Simmons 1980, del Hoyo et al 1994. The tracked eagle showed a preference for marshes, wetlands and coastal lagoons where its prey, such as coots, rats and waders, is abundant.…”

“…The greater spotted eagle Aquila clanga is a migratory medium-large raptor that breeds in a fragmented range across temperate Eurasia and winters in Southern Eurasia and Northern Africa (del Hoyo et al 1994). In Europe it winters primarily in Greece and western Turkey, and to a lesser extent in Crete, Macedonia, Croatia and Italy (del Hoyo et al 1994, Iankov et al 1996, Maciorowski et al 2014. Only a few wintering eagles occur more westerly (Iankov et al 1996, Barrientos & Bolonio 2002.…”

“…Data about dispersal rates for both species were still scarce, and hence populations were modelled as isolated, even though it is likely that some birds could disperse among populations. In fact, Egyptian Vultures are highly phylopatric according to observations of tagged birds, ringing recovery data (Grande 2006) and recent GPS satellite telemetry information (García-Ripollés et al 2010). Data on the spatial structure of Eurasian Griffon Vultures were also insufficient although juvenile and subadult birds could behave as dispersers and information about recruitment of this species was still scarce.…”
