A 1310-nm (O-band) coherent optical Link is demonstrated for short-range optical interconnects that operate to 56-GBd symbol rate (SR) (112 Gbps) with FEC-acceptable BER. The coherent optical receiver (CORX) leverages a monolithic 45-nm CMOS SOI photonic-enabled process to realize an energy-efficient quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) demodulation. Co-design of the optical and electronic circuit elements supports high-speed operation and low-power consumption. The coherent link is demonstrated with an optical transmitter photonic IC (PIC) fabricated in silicon photonic (SiPh) process with laser diodes wirebonded to a 90-nm SiGe driver electronic RFIC. The transmitter operates at 5.9-pJ/bit energy efficiency (EE) while the receiver achieves 0.73 pJ/bit and, to our knowledge, is the best EE reported for a coherent optical receiver.

The proliferation of computation-intensive technologies has led to a significant rise in the number of datacenters, posing challenges for high-speed and power-efficient datacenter interconnects (DCIs). Although inter-DCIs based on intensity modulation and direct detection (IM-DD) along with wavelength-division multiplexing technologies exhibit power-efficient and large-capacity properties, the requirement of multiple laser sources leads to high costs and limited scalability, and the chromatic dispersion (CD) restricts the transmission length of optical signals. Here we propose a scalable on-chip parallel IM-DD data transmission system enabled by a single-soliton Kerr microcomb and a reconfigurable microring resonator-based CD compensator. We experimentally demonstrate an aggregate line rate of 1.68 Tbit/s over a 20-km-long SMF. The extrapolated energy consumption for CD compensation of 40-km-SMFs is ~0.3 pJ/bit, which is calculated as being around 6 times less than that of the commercial 400G-ZR coherent transceivers. Our approach holds significant promise for achieving data rates exceeding 10 terabits.

Bi-directionally operated amplifiers enabling efficient utilization of transmission wavelengths are promising candidates in densely integrated photonic circuits for future cost-effective, power-efficient optical networks. Here, we demonstrate, for the first time, a broadband semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) based on a novel chirped multilayered quantum dot (QD) structure, which is suitable for bi-directional amplification via the dual ground state (GS) emission spectrum. The fabricated QD SOA has achieved a maximum 3-dB gain bandwidth of 50 nm while retaining on-chip gain above 20 dB at both GS wavelengths. Under an optimum pumping current of 280 mA, the bi-directionally operated QD SOA has shown around 10 dB receiver sensitivity improvement in ultra-high-speed 100 Gbaud non-return-to-zero and 53.125 Gbaud four-level pulse amplitude modulation data transmission systems.
