First Deepwater Well Successfully Drilled in Colombia with a High-Performance Water-Based Fluid

Abstract: Deepwater drilling presents significant issues and uncertainties, especially when there is no prior drilling experience in country or only limited offset information is available. Uncertainties about the drilling conditions create additional risk to operators and can cause project budget increases. Therefore, innovative technologies are often implemented to help ensure that the well is drilled efficiently and safely, operators obtain well data and important geological data that can help identify potential rese… Show more

“…Such mud forms filter cakes, which is a supra-molecular complex, containing carbonate, polymers and rock fines arising from drilling (Cobianco et al 2001). When drilling through the high-permeable formations, addition of different sized calcium carbonates blended to increase mud weight in mixture of salt and polymer-based mud is recommended (Marin et al 2009). …”

“…Hydrate inhibition property is one of the key properties of deepwater drilling fluids because hydrates formed inside the pipeline in deepwater drilling can obstruct drilling fluid flow and plug choke lines and blow out preventer stacks. Thermodynamic hydrate inhibitors (THIs) have been widely used in the past deepwater drilling operations, including methanol, glycol and NaCl (Mohammadi and Tohidi, 2005;Marin et al, 2009;Rashid et al, 2014). However, THIs need to be added in large amounts to prevent hydrate formation, which would lead to some operational problems and environmental concerns, such as high cost, logistic problem, excessive density and toxicity.…”

“…In recent years, a high performance WBDF has been developed [5,12,13], and it performs better than traditional WBDFs (water-based drilling fluids) in deepwater drilling. Owing to the development of a novel hydration inhibitor along with the use of encapsulator, the novel WBDF can achieve comparable shale inhibition to SBDF.…”
