First confirmed report of outbreak of malignant ovine theileriosis among goats in Sudan

Abstract: An outbreak of malignant ovine theileriosis among goats was confirmed and documented. In this outbreak, 16 out of 22 (72.7%) goats died within 4 days showing clinical signs of malignant ovine theileriosis as well as in the postmortem findings. The goats were reared in a mixed flock with sheep in Atbara Town, Northern Sudan. The infection was detected microscopically and confirmed serologically by IFA test and molecularly by PCR technique using specific primer for Theileria lestoquardi. Hyalomma anatolicum was … Show more

“…Five µl genomic DNA and 150 µg/ml of enhancer (Bovine serum albumin acetylated) were added to final reaction volume of 20 µl. The reaction was performed in a thermal cycler (Applied Bio system, USA) and the thermal cycling conditions were as described by Taha et al [16]. Five µl of each PCR product were visualized in 1.5% ethidium bromide stained gel and run in 1X TBE buffer in electrophoresis chamber.…”

“…The disease is highly pathogenic to sheep (Leemans et al, 1999 a,b;Tageldin et al, 2005) and goats (Taha et al, 2011). Even in indigenous sheep breeds, high morbidity and mortality rates were reported (El Hussein et al, 1998;El Imam et al, 2015).…”

“…In the case of T. lestoquardi, indigenous sheep are at risk in a situation where they are subjected to intensive tick control or when they are moved from disease free to endemic areas (Friedhoff, 1997;Tageldin et al, 2005;El Imam et al, 2015). Globally, high morbidity and mortality rates in sheep and goats were reported (El Hussein et al, 1998;Taha et al, 2011;Tageldin et al, 2005;El Imam et al, 2015). The disease economic importance can therefore be predicted, especially in countries where export of sheep and sheep products are a major component of their foreign income.…”
