First checklist on the amphibians and reptiles of Mount Korbu, the second highest peak in Peninsular Malaysia

Abstract: This study represents the first report on the amphibians and reptiles of Mount Korbu, the highest peak in the Titiwangsa Range (2182 m a.s.l.) and the second highest peak in Peninsular Malaysia. The Titiwangsa Range is the longest and most contiguous mountain range in Peninsular Malaysia, but only three upland localities have been extensively sampled and published on, indicating the urgent need for fieldwork to new localities along this range. We documented 18 species of amphibians from the families Bufonidae,… Show more

“…At 1800 m above sea level, the forest is known as upper montane forest and B I O D I V E R S I T A S 21 (4): 1707-1713, April 2020 1708 mossy forest. Subalpine and alpine forests can be found at 2900 m and 3500 m, respectively (Chan et al 2019). Studies on the diversity of macrofungi in Malaysia in the highlands/ mountains were also recorded but not as often as those conducted in the lowlands.…”

“…located in the Hulu Kinta Forest Reserve and reported as the second highest mountain in Peninsular Malaysia behind Gunung Tahan in Pahang. The vegetation of this mountains comprises of dipterocarp forests, upper dipterocarp forests, montane forests, and ericaceous forests (Chan et al 2019). Strategically located within the Kinta Valley Geopark, Gunung Korbu is part of prerequisite site for biodiversity and geological heritage.…”

“…Spatial phylogenetic approaches to conservation management have not been implemented before in Malaysia largely due to the lack of genetic resources in the past. However, over the last decade or so, surveys to unexplored as well as commonly explored areas and the increased use of genetic methods in biodiversity research have generated a wealth of spatial and phylogenetic data, especially for frogs and lizards Chan & Ahmad 2009;Matsui 2009;Matsui et al 2009Matsui et al , 2014Chan et al , 2010aChan et al , 2010bChan et al , 2014Chan et al , 2019Grismer et al 2010cGrismer et al , 2010aGrismer et al , 2011aGrismer et al , 2011bGrismer et al , 2014bGrismer et al , 2014aQuah et al 2011Quah et al , 2017Quah et al , 2019bQuah et al , 2019aSumarli et al 2015Sumarli et al , 2016Davis et al 2016). These taxa have high extinction rates and relatively restricted ranges, which makes them ideal organisms for identifying areas of high conservation priority (Isaac et al 2012;Barratt et al 2017;Fenker et al 2020;Gumbs et al 2020).…”
