Catalogue of the Diptera (Insecta) of Morocco— an annotated checklist, with distributions and a bibliography

The faunistic knowledge of the Diptera of Morocco recorded from 1787 to 2021 is summarized and updated in this first catalogue of Moroccan Diptera species. A total of 3057 species, classified into 948 genera and 93 families (21 Nematocera and 72 Brachycera), are listed. Taxa (superfamily, family, genus and species) have been updated according to current interpretations, based on reviews in the literature, the expertise of authors and contributors, and recently conducted fieldwork. Data to compile this catalogue were primarily gathered from the literature. In total, 1225 references were consulted and some information was also obtained from online databases. Each family was reviewed and the checklist updated by the respective taxon expert(s), including the number of species that can be expected for that family in Morocco. For each valid species, synonyms known to have been used for published records from Morocco are listed under the currently accepted name. Where available, distribution within Morocco is also included. One new combination is proposed: Assuania melanoleuca (Séguy, 1941), comb. nov. (Chloropidae).

Fruit production in Sub-Saharan Africa is of paramount importance both socially and economically. Millions of farmers derive livelihoods from mango, avocado, citrus, cashew, and coconut farming, but native and alien invasive species constrain production The region’s capacity to contain invasives is weak due to the absence of national and institutional support systems for early detection, containment, eradication, or management of the pests. Climate change is expected to play a huge role in the influx of more alien invasive species and the shift of ecological requirements of some native species. Though a fair share of pre-and post-management pest management techniques for several insect pests has been developed, adoption and adaptation of the options are limited. Data on economic and social implications are largely lacking, making it challenging to implement informed policy decisions. The existence of the “Strategy for Managing Invasive Species in Africa 2021–2030” promises a paradigm shift in the management of invasives, from reactive thinking to coordinated proactive approaches. The uncoordinated deployment of management measures in the region and the lack of funding, play a negative role in managing the pests effectively. Prospects for enhanced future research are wide, and efforts are currently being channeled to Area-Wide-Integrated Pest Management in a bottom-up approach with stakeholders owning the process. Participatory development of technologies is also taking centre stage, paving the way for increased adoption and adaptation. Postharvest technologies promise to provide the adequate phytosanitary assurance required by countries importing fruit from Sub-Saharan Africa.

Dacus frontalis (Diptera: Tephritidae) is an emerging species affecting fruit production in Africa and can poses a serious risk to Cucurbitaceae fruit producing industry in Europe as a response to climat change. To understand how temperature impacts specie's tness, population dynamics and consequently its invasive potential, we studied for the rst time survival and development time of immature stages, and longevity and fecundity of D. frontalis adults in laboratory at four constant temperatures of 15, 20, 25 and 30°C. Results showed that temperature has signi cant effect on the survival, development, reproduction and longevity of the pumpkin fruit y. The highest survival rates of egg, larvae, pupae, female and male adults were observed at 20°C. The developmental time of immature stages and from egg to adult signi cantly decreased with increasing temperature from 15 to 30°C. Female produces signi cantly the highest number of eggs at 20°C, but no oviposition was observed at 15°C. Pupae are able to survive at 15°C with highest development time, suggesting that this tephritid species can overwinter as pupae in the eld. The thermal requirement can explain the seasonality of D. frontalis observed in North Africa and a temperature range of 20 ± 1°C appears to be most suitable for the population growth as well as the rearing of this insect in the laboratory. Practical implications for pest management were discussed.
