First characterization of the ultra-shielded chamber in the low-noise underground laboratory (LSBB) of Rustrel-Pays d'Apt

Abstract: In compliance with international agreements on nuclear weapons limitation, the French groundbased nuclear arsenal has been decommissioned in its totality. One of its former underground missile control centers, located in Rustrel, 60 km east of Avignon (Provence) has been converted into the "Laboratoire Souterrainà Bas Bruit de Rustrel-Pays d'Apt" (LSBB). The deepest experimental hall (500 m of calcite rock overburden) includes a 100 m 2 area of sturdy flooring suspended by and resting on shock absorbers, entir… Show more

“…At the deepest point (500 m below the surface), a nonconventional shielded cylindrical capsule is embedded without any μ-metal. The chamber is suspended on massive springs cutting off low frequency ground motions with a residual electromagnetic noise lower than 2 f T/ √ Hz above 10 Hz (Waysand et al 1999;Gaffet et al 2003). To preserve these outstanding conditions, sensitive parts of the experiment including sample, seismic source and sensors, are located within the ultra-shielded chamber.…”

“…At 1500 mwe, the ambient neutron flux is primarily due to the surrounding calcite rock, estimated at well below 4 Â 10 À5 n=cm 2 s [11]. The cavern is shielded from the rock environment by a 30-100 cm thickness of concrete, internally sheathed by a 1 cm thickness of iron.…”
