First case of pneumonia caused by Cupriavidus pauculus in an infant in the Gulf Cooperation Council

Abstract: * These authors contributed equally to the manuscript. AbstractCupriavidus pauculus is an emerging organism causing infections in immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients. We report a C.pauculus pneumonia case susceptible to cefepime in an infant with end-stage renal failure. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of C. pauculus causing respiratory infections in the Gulf Cooperation Council.

“…From intestinal studies, we know that the genus Elizabethkingia sp. is present in the mucosa of ulcerative colitis (UC) patients and significantly higher in exacerbated UC [43]. In our infant samples, we found an increased abundance of this genus in the mucosa compared to the lumen.…”

“…and Cupriavidus sp. are overlapping genera known as environmental Gram-negative bacteria belonging to the class Betaproteobacteria of low virulence, rarely causing infections in nonimmunosuppressed humans [42,43]. Nevertheless, the gastrointestinal tract of neonates suffering from necrotizing enterocolitis was already described in a study by Smith et al in 2011 to be colonized with Ralstonia sp.…”

“…It has been implicated in pseudo-outbreaks of skin and superficial site infections. It is believed to cause nosocomial infections by the contamination of nebulization solution, ultrafiltrate water, thermos-regulator reservoir water, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation system (ECMO), tap water, hydrotherapy pools, and bottled mineral water [9][10][11]. It causes infection in predominantly immunocompromised hosts, especially in hematological malignancies and hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) patients.…”

“…The genus Cupriavidus was first proposed in 1987 by Makkar and Casida, who described Cupriavidus necator: a nonobligate bacterial predator of bacteria in soil [3,4]. Since then, a total of 17 recognized Cupriavidus species have been reported [5], and to date, C. gilardii [1,6,7], C. metallidurans [8], and C. pauculus [9,10] have been isolated from human clinical specimens.…”
