“…Thus, maintenance of vocal cord tonus was likely due to, at least in part, the preservation of the continuity of nerve fibers via intracapsular enucleation, which could be beneficial compared to total resection that completely resects the involved nerve. Furthermore, in sympathetic chain schwannoma, the incidence of first bite syndrome, a known complication of surgeries involving the PPS, was significantly lower after intracapsular enucleation than after total resection. This is also likely a result of successful preservation of the sympathetic chain fibers traveling from the superior cervical ganglion to the parotid gland by reducing the damage to the nerve fibers around the external carotid artery.…”

“…Type and incidence of postoperative complications immediately after and 6 months after surgery were evaluated. Neurological deficit of the sympathetic chain was defined as the development of Horner's syndrome and/or first bite syndrome . The two‐tailed Fisher's exact test was applied to assess diagnostic performance by using contingency table analysis, and to examine correlations among categorical variables.…”

“…The syndrome is classically described as a postoperative complication of parapharyngeal space surgery, and is believed to be secondary to disruption of the sympathetic plexus along the carotid system during surgery. [2][3][4][5] The pain generally first presents 1 week after surgery and may require surgical or medical intervention (anticonvulsants and tricyclic antidepressants) or other methods, such as Botox, for the cyclic prandial pain, with the possibility of an incurable state of disease. 6,7 Parotid gland cancers are relatively uncommon cancers compromising <5% of all head and neck cancers.…”
