Fire Size of Gasoline Pool Fires

Abstract: This article presents an experimental investigation of the flame characteristics of the gasoline pool fire. A series of experiments with different pool sizes and mixture contents were conducted to study the combustion behavior of pool fires in atmospheric conditions. The initial pool area of 0.25 m2, 0.66 m2, and 2.8 m2, the initial volume of fuel and time of burning process, and the initial gasoline thickness of 20 mm were determined in each experiment. The fire models are defined by the European standard EN … Show more

“…2, 3 show that the significant intensity of thermal radiation, and, accordingly, burning, is achieved by alcohols on seconds 30-40, reach a maximum on second 60. This coincides with the conclusions drawn by the authors of work [15] who indicate that the burning of hydrocarbon fuels acquires a maximum scope in the first 60 seconds. At the same time, with the insufficient intensity of aerosol supply, extinguishing is not achieved while the intensity of radiation is significantly reduced.…”

“…The burning area (red colour in Fig. 2 left) with prescribed HRR can be characterized as a pool fire [17] inside the noncombustible car frame, taking into account all combustible materials inside a car [18][19][20][21][22]. The reference curve is shown in Fig.…”

“…The flame retardant materials are commonly applied in current underground trains, which may substantially limit the size of a train fire, According to the results of related fire experiments (Marková et al, 2020), the size of fire caused by luggage in the train is generally 2 MW. However, as the fire develops and expands, the heat release rate will further increase.…”
