Fire management on Imperata grasslands as part of agroforestry development in Indonesia

Abstract: Fire is an important factor in the Imperata grassland ecosystem. It prevents or slows down the natural succession to shrubs and/or secondary forest vegetation and is a major threat to (agro)forestry options for Imperata grassland rehabilitation. Forest fires can also be a primary cause of the extension of Imperata grasslands. In this review an attempt is made to integrate biophysical and socioeconomic aspects of the causation of fires in a conceptual model. Fire effects on vegetation are examined. The manageme… Show more

“…A review of literature on typical Imperata grassland in oil palm growing regions reveals AGBs ranging from 3.8 Mg ha -1 to 23.0 Mg ha -1 (Hartemink, 2001;Hashimoto, Kojima, Tange, & Sasaki, 2000;Holmes, Lemerle, & Schottler, 1980;Lasco et al, 2000;NRI, 1996;Otsamo, 2001;Roshetko, Delaney, Hairiah, & Purnomosidhi, 2002;Wibowo, Suharti, Sagala, Hibani, & van Noordwijk, 1997). The average AGB of 11.2 ± 7.3 Mg ha -1 obtained from these data and applied in the following calculations is distinctly higher than the given IPCC range.…”

“…Wild fires have an increasing large-scale impact on nature and society in the humid tropics (Wibowo et al, 1997;Nepstad et al, 1999). For example, the severe droughts associated with the El Niño events in 1982/83 and 1997/98 caused severe and widespread fires.…”

“…The transformation of forest into grassland is considered the main negative impact of fire (Gadas, 2000; Mudita, 2000). ‘Fires’ are often taken to mean ‘escaped fires’, intentionally set to stimulate regrowth of grass for grazing and spreading to forest (Foenay, 2000) and reforestation areas (Wibowo et al ., 1997; Djoeroemana et al ., 2000). Shifting cultivation and grassland fires are also thought to be contributing to sedimentation and flooding (Juspan, 2000; Mudita, 2000), the destruction of property such as wood fences in the fields (Mudita, 2000), the reduction of air quality (Grist & Menz, 1997; Mudita, 2000), and causing carbon emissions that affect climate change (Grist & Menz, 1997).…”
