The paper analyses the impact that the construction of water mist extinguishers exerts on the size of generated drops. The test was based on the examination of three extinguishers of two producers, which have been available in the market in recent years. The test was carried out with the use of the IPS Drop Spectrum Analyzer (DSA). The device operates by using the photoelectric method to measure the parameters of the extinguishing stream microstructure. There were two measuring ranges: 0÷1 414 µm and 0÷2 658 µm. The test results present mean diameters of the generated drops, aggregated curves representative of their share as well as the analysis of the quality of spraying the extinguishing medium. The tests have shown that two out of three tested extinguishers do not generate water mist with standard parameters at a distance of 170 cm. The smallest mean diameters of drops were generated by extinguisher B, whereas the biggest ones by extinguisher C The highest level of spraying among all samples was found for extinguisher B. It’s Sauter diameter mean amounted to 564.03 µm. Further, it was shown what impact the construction of water mist extinguishers exerts on the size of generated drops.

Fire suppression tests using low pressure twin‐fluid water mist under low pressure environments were carried out to exam the performance of water mist systems at low pressure environments. The experiment results show that the suppression time gets shorter for lower chamber pressure, and relevant total weight of water and nitrogen used decreases as the chamber pressure gets lower. For the case of 30‐cm diameter pool fire, the suppression times are 20.19, 7.5, and 2.24 under the chamber pressure of 60, 38, and 24 kPa, respectively. In case of a cargo compartments fire, it is suggested to open the ventilation valve of the cargo compartment at a high cruising altitude to relieve pressure, so as to achieve rapid fire suppression. When a fire happens at the position off the center below the water mist nozzle, the water mist suppression effects will be weakened. The fire size has little effects on the fire extinguishing process under pressure of 24 kPa. Under the critical atomization condition with the pressure differential between the inlet and outlet of the nozzle for water as 0.05 MPa (5.04 L/min), and the pressure differential for nitrogen as 0.10 MPa (10.97 L/min), the suppression time is the shortest as 18.66 seconds.

ABSTRACT:In order to clarify the effect of nitrogen-water mist two-phase flow on extinguishing spontaneous combustion of residual coal, experiments were carried out in similarity model of mine goaf by using self-designed device. The experimental results indicated that the average cooling rates of 1-6# K type thermocouple temperatures in goaf were 24.6°C/min, 8.3°C/min, 4.2°C/min, 12.3°C/min, 8.1°C/min and 19.2°C/min during the period of 55-80 min when nitrogen-water mist was applied to combustion area. After the application of nitrogen-water mist, the consumption rate of O 2 in the experiment was reduced from 3.16 × 10 -4 m 3 /s to 1.41 × 10 -4 m 3 /s; the generation rates of CO, CO 2 were reduced from 3.91 × 10 -5 m 3 /s, 1.74 × 10 -4 m 3 /s to 1.69 × 10 -6 m 3 /s, 6.57 × 10 -6 m 3 /s, respectively; the generation rate of H 2 was reduced from 1.41 × 10 -5 m 3 /s to 3.6 × 10 -8 m 3 /s; the emission rate of CH 4 was reduced from 1.05 × 10 -5 m 3 /s to 7.78 × 10 -7 m 3 /s. The experimental results suggested that nitrogen-water mist could effectively suppress the burning of coal and reduce the generation amount of toxic and harmful gas in mine goaf.
