Finite elements, design optimization, and nondestructive evaluation: A review in magnetics, and future directions in GPU-based, element-by-element coupled optimization and NDE

Abstract: Most important journal papers in magnetics are selected from conference records with quick review and subject to stringent page limits. The literature as a result is unsatisfactory, inadequately attributing previous works and without sufficient details to replicate work presented. This paper therefore reviews mathematical optimization in synthesis and nondestructive evaluation (NDE) by the finite element method in magnetics. The review identifies the earliest papers. Thereafter this paper proposes and establis… Show more

“…Several strategies are proposed to improve performance on many-core GPUs as in [6] for optimization of memory transfers between device and host, appropriate thread utilization, optimization of global memory latency, occpancy gain, increased coalesced memory access, reduced thread divergence and increase global memory store or load efficiencty. A review of GPU base FEM implementation in the domain of magnetics was presented by Hoole et al [7].…”

“…In 2014, Hoole et al [20] presented a good review related to FEM computations on a GPU in the field of magnetics. Some topics, such as SpMV and preconditioning in the CG algorithm, were not covered in that paper.…”
