Finite element modeling of deposition of ceramic material during SLM additive manufacturing

Abstract: Abstract. A three dimensional model for material deposition in Selective Laser Melting (SLM) with application to Al ଶ O ଷ -ZrO ଶ eutectic ceramic is presented. As the material is transparent to laser, dopants are added to increase the heat absorption efficiency. Based on Beer-Lambert law, a volumetric heat source model taking into account the material absorption is derived. The Level Set method with multiphase homogenization is used to track the shape of deposed bead and the thermodynamic is coupled to calcula… Show more

“…These will be applied to predict microstructure evolution in bulk metallic glass matrix composites (BMGMC). Following research objectives are aimed to be achieved during research; (Khairallah et al 2016;Gusarov and Kruth 2005;Pengpeng and Dongdong 2015;Zohdi 2014;Chen et al 2016;Yuan 2013). It is aimed to be programmed in commercial finite element (FE) simulation code ABAQUS® with moving heat source and varying boundary conditions.…”

“…Hence, this study established a heat conduction model with sintering effects for SLM of silica glass to predict the density distribution. Similar to the previous investigations done by other researchers [7,[9][10][11][12], we focus our numerical study on the glass monolayer in the SLM process, which is fundamental for the research of parts fabrication.…”

“…Subsequently, they numerically simulate a convection-diffusion phase change process during the laser melting of ceramic materials [10]. In one study, a 3D finite element model of ceramic material during SLM with concurrent shrinkage is established by Chen et al [11]. To obtain fused silica, Protasov et al [12] successfully calculate heat transfer in the consolidation process of silica powder bed by considering the effective thermal conductivity related to the neck growth between glass particles.…”
