Finite element model for rectangular hollow section T joints

Abstract: Major developments in hardware and software enable researchers and engineers to apply non-linear finite-element analyses to study the behavior of tubular structures. However, to provide reasonable results, constructed finite element models should be verified and validated with experimental data. This article develops a finite element model for high strength steel rectangular hollow section T joints. The joints are considered under in-plane bending moment and axial brace loading. The paper determines the most s… Show more

“…For X-joints and T-joints with compensating ending moments, it was recommended the use of chord lengths of at least 10d 0 , and 6d 0 for X-joints with sections with slenderness values lower than 25. These conclusions were similar to the ones found by Voth and Packer (2012a, 2012b, 2012c when studying plate-to-CHS connections, whereas several researchers adopted the 6d 0 minimum chord length criteria Wang, 2015aWang, , 2015bGarifullin et al, 2018).…”

“…However, to enable this analysis, the bending moments acting in the joints had to be removed since the bending moments were dependent on the chord lengths, preventing the direct comparison between models with different lengths. Therefore, exclusively for the analysis of the chord length, an experimental/numerical technique was adopted that consisted of fully supporting the chord’s lower face to prevent vertical displacements and, consequently, the emergence of bending moments in the joints (Correia et al, 2019; Garifullin et al, 2018; Lima et al, 2018b).…”
