Fingerprint analysis of FTIR spectra of polymers containing vinyl acetate

Abstract: The analysis of materials using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy has a unique area called the fingerprint region for each compound. However, this area is almost never discussed because of its complexity due to the large number of signals that appear in it. In this work, the fingerprint region analysis of the ethylene–vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) with different percentages of vinyl acetate (VA) (18%, 28%, 40%) was performed. In comparison with other instrumental techniques, the crystallinity and … Show more

“…Hence, high water absorption could be expected for these samples. In line with this view, the bands at 3304 and 1639 cm À1 , corresponding to the O─H stretching and O─H bending of H 2 O, [43][44][45][46] were particularly observed for EVA33 and EVA33/SiO 2 (Figure 5(c), (d)). On the other hand, none of these bands can be noticed for EVA18 and EVA28 (Figure 5(a),(b)).…”

“…The low-intensity mode located at 552 cm −1 can be attributed to Ag-O stretching, showing the presence of Ag in SiO 2 -Ag [ 96 , 97 ]. For EVA, bands referring to the fingerprint of the polymer are observed at 2954, 2850, 1467, 1243, 874, 707, and 546 cm −1 , related to the EVA aliphatic groups [ 98 , 99 , 100 , 101 , 102 ]. At 1020 cm −1 , the bending of the C–O–C bonds is observed [ 102 ], and at 1801 and 1739 cm −1 , the C=O bond stretching refers to two different types of carbonyl groups [ 101 , 102 ], as noted by Poljansek et al [ 103 ].…”

“…The last spectral region “fingerprint” [ 44 ] below 900 cm −1 is responsible for crystal areas and indicates conformational changes in the material under research [ 45 ]. The region of the fingerprint is the region of infrared spectra where each organic compound has its own unique line of absorption.…”
