“…The electron-dense layer formed after germination on the outer surface of the hypha seems to be of similar nature. An analogous layer has been found in permanganate fixed hyphae of Aspergillus fiiinigat~is (Campbell 1970). Other authors suggest that the outermost layer of the hyphae is made of glucan (Hunsley and Burnett 1970;Jones 1970;Bartnicki-Garcia 1968).…”

“…Vacuoles found in P. notatunz are similar to those found by Garcia-Acha et al (1966) and by Lowry and Sussman (1968). By analogy with other fungi the electron-transparent granules that we have found are storage bodies composed either of polysaccharides (Campbell 1968;Campbell 1970) or lipids (Matile et al 1969). Some of them become concentrated at the hyphal tip suggesting that they may be encased in the wall as it forms (Hemmes and Hohl 1969;McClure et al 1968).…”

“…Two ultrastructural studies of A. fumigatus found no evidence for multiple layers in the cell wall per se, though flocculent electron-dense material covering the outer wall was noted (41,197). One of the reports, however, stated that the conidia had two wall layers (197).…”
