Fine-structure and tensor polarizabilities of 1snd 3 D levels of He I (n=3 to 7)

Abstract: Using level crossing techniques the fine-structure splittings and tensor polarizabilities of the lsnd3D levels of He I with n=3 to 7 have been measured. For excitation we used 35 keV He + -He collisions. Magnetic and electric fields perpendicular to the ion beam have been applied to the target volume. In this way level crossing signals overlapping if as usually a pure magnetic-field splitting is investigated could be shifted and separated. From these measurements precision values of the large fine-structure int… Show more

“…A lot of suitable level-crossing signals have been registered recently in our laboratory in connection with fine-structure investigations on He 1 [1]. With regard to the 35keV-He---He collisions investigated here we confirm the spin-independence of the excitation matrix as expected.…”

“…According to these formulae, also numerical evaluations of the energy separation were performed where intershell mixing of 1s3p and 1snl states with n 8 was taken into account. The results did not differ significantly from the value given in (15). Therefore, we conclude from the experimental result that the assumption of J independent polarizabilities cannot be maintained and that the scalar polarizabilities of the 3 3 P 2 and 3 3 P 0 level differ by about 1 kHz (kV cm −1 ) −2 .…”

“…can be evaluated from the zero-field fine structure splittings ν 20 and ν 31 of the 3 3 P and 3 3 D level, respectively, and the interconfiguration matrix element [14] h ss off = 1s3s 3 S 1 |H ss |1s3d 3 D 1 /h (14) of the spin-spin coupling H ss . With ν 20 as given above and ν 31 = 1400.7(4) MHz [15], one finds: ν min = 8246 MHz − 0.0015h ss off .…”

“…Some experiments by means of classical emission spectroscopy were performed at our institute for He and Ar lines [14,15]. Later on, crossed fields were already used in level-anticrossing spectroscopy [16] in order to separate overlapping crossing points. By means of laser spectroscopy, the influence of crossed fields on Rydberg states were studied in detail [17].…”
