Zamiaceae, a family of the ancient order Cycadales, is distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of both the Old and New Worlds. Here, we present a systematic review of Zamiaceae with emphasis on Zamia species from South America. We aim to (a) establish the current knowledge, (b) identify research gaps, and (c) indicate directions for future studies, discussing ecology and conservation of South America species. The search recovered 508 papers, further classified into 11 research topics: taxonomy and systematics, morphology, biochemistry, genetics, phylogeography, population ecology, reproductive biology, ecological interactions, plant propagation, conservation, and reviews. The number of publications doubled in the 21st century, mostly focusing on genetics (n ¼ 60), taxonomy and systematics (n ¼ 52), morphology (n ¼ 36), ecological interactions (n ¼ 30), and an increasing interest in population ecology (n ¼ 29) and conservation (n ¼ 32). Studies are concentrated in North and Central America (54% of all studies) with just 6% (29) addressing South America species of Zamia. Overall, studies point out the key role of pollinators in promoting gene flow through pollen dispersal among populations of Zamiaceae. Therefore, investigate natural history, ecology, reproductive biology, genetic, and phylogeography, especially for South America species, are needed. Moreover, the implementation of in situ and ex situ collections and germplasm banks linked to botanical gardens are essential for the conservation and reestablishment of local populations of critically endangered Zamia species in South America. Concomitantly, we suggest studies modeling the distribution of Zamia species in future climate change scenarios.

Zamia furfuracea es una planta endémica del estado de Veracruz, que posee un gran valor ornamental y un alto potencial de uso. Se encuentra catalogada como una especie “En Peligro” de extinción, debido a que en las últimas cuatro décadas, fueron extraídas plantas, semillas e incluso individuos adultos de sus poblaciones naturales de forma ilegal, reduciéndolas hasta en un 40%. Por tal motivo, se desarrolló el presente trabajo con el objetivo de establecer un enfoque integral para su manejo y conservación, tanto a nivel local como regional. Para ello se identificaron y evaluaron diversos índices de fragmentación que están incidiendo en sus poblaciones y se realizaron estudios sobre su biología reproductiva, demografía y diversidad genética. Se encontró que aunque todas las poblaciones se encuentran afectadas por diferentes agentes de perturbación, todos ellos han estado afectando la viabilidad y germinación de las semillas así como la supervivencia de los individuos juveniles. Con base a los resultados obtenidos se proponen diferentes estrategias de conservación para cada una de las poblaciones estudiadas y aunque se concluye que la conservación ex situ es la mejor alternativa para la conservación de la especie, no se descarta la conveniencia de implementar acciones para su conservación y manejo in situ.

Background: Epiphytic plants exist within the complex three-dimensional habitat of the tree canopy. This can have a profound effect on patterns of both genetic diversity and structure and may be important for conservation of epiphytic species. Objective: To evaluate how the epiphytic habit affects fine-scale three-dimensional genetic structure in single canopy tree populations. Studied species: Laelia speciosa, a threatened endemic Mexican epiphytic orchid. Study site and dates: Field sampling occurred during Spring 2006 in the municipality of Caurio de Guadalupe, Michoacán.Methods: All individuals occurring in two trees of Q. deserticola (178 in Tree 1 and 276 in Tree 2) were mapped, assigned to four discrete age classes, and genotyped at six microsatellite loci to understand patterns of genetic diversity and structure. Results: High levels of genetic diversity (polymorphic loci = 100 %, Ho = 0.398 – 0.506) occurred across size classes and trees but were not significantly different between the two trees. Significant fine-scale genetic structure was found in the Juvenile (plants 2-10 years old) and Adults I (11-20 years old) age classes in distances up to 15 cm. This significant structure was larger (up to 25 cm) when all individuals were treated as a single age class.Conclusion: The distribution and structure of genetic diversity is attributable to the epiphytic habit, particularly localized seed dispersal, limited selfing, and selection of adaptive traits. Conservation implications related to the sampling for in vitro propagation are given in light of the metapopulation genetic variability maintained within single-tree populations.
