Oxygen lances (OLs) are important devices used in converter steel making. However, the occurrence of OL burning loss (OLBL) failure may lead to explosion accidents. To better prevent OLBL failure, it is necessary to perform a probabilistic assessment. Bow-tie analysis based on fuzzy theory was proposed to assess OLBL, which represents a hazardous event. In this paper, fuzzy theory based on triangular fuzzy numbers (TFNs) was applied to calculate the failure data. Fuzzy fault tree analysis (FFTA) in combination with the improved similarity aggregation method (ISAM) was employed to reduce the error generated due to the subjective judgement of experts. Furthermore, a comprehensive importance analysis method was developed to rank the importance of basic events (BEs), facilitating the adoption of the corresponding safety decisions. When performing fuzzy event tree analysis (FETA), the occurrence probability of outcome events (OEs) was determined by conducting a layer of protection analysis (LOPA). Finally, safety measures were proposed based on the assessment results to achieve safe production. The results indicated that the use of bow-tie analysis is appropriate to perform qualitative and quantitative assessment. Through bow-tie analysis based on fuzzy theory, the occurrence probability of OLBL was determined to be in the interval (5.34E − 02, 2.69E − 01). By adding independent protective layers (IPLs), the occurrence probability of OEs caused by OLBL can be effectively reduced.

This study proposes a coupled computational fluid dynamics and thermodynamics model based on the assumption of interface equilibrium at the steel‐slag interface to simulate the desulfurization process in a ladle furnace. The species transport equation is solved to analyze the kinetic behavior and chemical content variation in the melt. Sulfur distribution ratio is calculated based on the slag sulfide capacity and oxygen activity. Subsequently, the solutions are coupled by introducing the species transfer and source terms generated by comparing the initial and predicted thermodynamic equilibrium states at the steel‐slag interface cell. The model is validated by experimentally comparing the sulfur content. Furthermore, the model is applied under different kinetics and thermodynamics conditions. With an increase in the gas flow rate, the in‐phase effective diffusion coefficient increases, but the number of interface cells involved in the sulfur transfer process decreases. The complex relationship between the desulfurization process and the gas flow rate results from the mutual antagonism between these two factors. Moreover, the study findings demonstrate that a higher slag basicity enhances the calculated sulfur distribution ratio and final desulfurization ratio.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:As having an important part of coordination control in steelmaking process, traditional production planning and scheduling technologies are developed with little consideration of the metallurgy mechanism, leading to lower feasibility for actual production. Based on current situation and requirements of steel plants, this paper focuses on the investigation of the charge plan from the view of metallurgy and establishes a charge planning model concerning the minimization of both the open order amount and the difference in due dates of the orders in each charge. A modified multi-objective evolutionary algorithm is proposed to solve the charge planning model of steelmaking process. By presenting a new fitness function, based on the rule of target ranking and introducing the Elitism strategy to construct the non-inferior solution set, the quality of solutions is improved effectively and the convergence of the algorithm is enhanced remarkably. Simulation experiments are carried out on the orders from actual production, and the proposed algorithm produces a group of optimized charge plans in a short time. The quality of the solutions is better than those produced by a genetic algorithm, modified partheno-genetic algorithm, and those produced manually to some extent. The simulation results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed model and the algorithm.
