Fine-needle aspiration biopsy of salivary duct carcinoma: Report of five cases

Abstract: Salivary duct carcinoma is a high grade malignancy which histologically strongly resembles ductal carcinoma of the breast. The findings from five cases of histologically proven salivary duct carcinoma sampled by preoperative fine‐needle aspiration (FNA) cytology are presented. Characteristic cytomorphologic features include cohesive clusters and flat sheets of epithelial cells which display a cribriform pattern with eccentrically located, hyperchromatic nuclei, abundant finely granular cytoplasm, and necrosis … Show more

“…The peak incidence is in the seventh decade of life, and its occurrence in patients under age50 year is uncommon [1]. Because of similar histologic features, salivary duct carcinoma is often compared to ductal carcinoma [2], atypical ductal hyperplasia [3,4] of the breast, but the majority of patients are men. This malignancy is one of the most aggressive salivary gland malignancies [1].…”

“…In keeping with the experience of salivary duct carcinoma cytomorphology in the literature, most of these 21 cases were salivary duct carcinomas but also included several other high-grade carcinoma types, including adenocarcinoma not otherwise specified and high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma. 19,20 …”

“…There have been several reports describing the cytologic features of salivary duct carcinoma; however, accurate diagnosis by FNAC can still be difficult due to its nonspecific, high-grade nuclear features. [25]…”

“…On account of its apocrine features and a high nuclear grade, several primary and metastatic neoplasms enter the differential diagnosis, particularly on fine needle aspiration cytology. [25]…”
