Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsy of Lymph Nodes in the Modern Era

Abstract: Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy has proven to be a rapid, cost-effective, and accurate means for evaluating a wide variety of conditions in almost any organ system. In some situations, conditions resulting in reactive lymphadenopathies can be discerned on clinical grounds, and many require no specific therapy. However, cases in which an atypical presentation or a prolonged clinical course occurs warrant further investigation of the enlarged lymph nodes, often with the aim of ruling out a malignancy. “…Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) has been advocated as a useful method in comparison to more expensive surgical excision biopsies in developing countries with limited resources. FNAC of lymph node has become an integral part of the initial diagnosis and management of patients with lymphadenopathy due to early availability of results, simplicity, and, minimal trauma with less complication 3 .…”

“…This finding was lower than that of Keith et al (2007). Who reported 88% diagnostic accuracy [15]. False negative diagnosis of Hodgkin's disease, in particular, as reactive hyperplasia is a common scenario and reported in many previous studies.…”
