Fine-Grained Congestion Control for Multipath TCP in Data Center Networks

Abstract: In data center networks, MultiPath TCP (MPTCP) obtains both higher network utilization and fairer allocation of capacity by exploring multiple paths simultaneously. However, MPTCP experiences more queue oscillation in switch buffer with the increasing of the number of subflows. When using explicit congestion notification as the congestion indication to track the queue length in switch buffer, it is difficult for MPTCP to capture the accurate congestion state, resulting in wrong behavior in congestion control. … Show more

“…J. Zhao et al [9] proposed an extended MPTCP solution to improve the experience quality of Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH). J. Ye et al [10] proposed an improved MPTCP in Data Center Networking (DCN) to achieve the dual goals of low latency and high throughput. The development of these draft standards and application specifications provides a theoretical basis for the large-scale application of MPTCP in the future Internet.…”

“…And he proposed an adaptive multipath congestion control mechanism by switching multi-path flows and single-path flows adaptively. J. Ye et al [21] proposed an enhanced MPTCP protocol, which adjusted the time granularity of the congestion detection and control under a different number of subflows and achieved lower latency for small flows and higher throughput for large flows. Kimura and Loureiro [22] proposed a multipath congestion control algorithm adjusts the sending operation of all subflows in a coupled fashion in order to achieve various objectives, such as friendliness, responsiveness, throughput improvement and congestion balance.…”
