Findings of a Pilot Study Investigating the Effects of Mediterranean Diet and Aerobic Exercise on Cognition in Cognitively Healthy Older People Living Independently within Aged-Care Facilities: The Lifestyle Intervention in Independent Living Aged Care (LIILAC) Study

Abstract: Background Cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease are more prevalent in our aging population. Modifiable risk factors, such as diet and sedentary lifestyle, have been proposed as key to potentially ameliorating cognitive decline. Both exercise and Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) have been linked to reduced levels of cardiovascular disease and other comorbidities. Higher levels of exercise and MedDiet adherence may prove to be cognitively protective, both individually and synergistically. … Show more

“…These data do not agree with the results presented by Barnes et al [ 83 ] and Laxmaiah et al [ 84 ], who established that physical activity engagement is positively associated with the consumption of an energy-balanced diet. On the other hand, Hardman et al [ 85 ] and Jospe et al [ 86 ] argue that calorie consumption will depend on the type of physical activity in question.…”

“…Thus, the occurrence of multifactorial diseases, such as cardiovascular, neurodegenerative and neoplastic diseases, has a common trait, represented by the onset of oxidative stress [1]. As a solution, some life-style patterns, including diet and exercise, have become increasingly important in stimulating molecular mechanisms in attempting to prevent the onset of oxidative stress via reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) formation [2]. Because of the health implications, in the last decades, the increasing consumers' awareness about food processing and food quality pushed the food industry to meet new requirements in preparing healthier However, the use of PUFAs in food matrices is not exempt from difficulties, since they show an extremely high sensitivity to oxidation (Scheme 2), resulting in a severe loss of food quality driven by the accumulation of oxidation harmful by-products, such as aldehydes and ketones [8,9].…”

“…Contextual Memory (CM) and Spatial Working Memory (SWM) are two of the most sensitive tests of age-associated cognitive decline [ 70 ]. Both tasks are sensitive to change through dietary intervention [ 21, 71, 72 ]. The current study focused on the performance outcomes for these two tests.…”
