Findings and Challenges of High Permeability Zone on Water Injection Pilots in Iraqi Carbonate Reservoirs

Abstract: Mishrif carbonate formation is widely developed in Iraq and other areas of Middle East. When it comes to carbonate reservoir water injection development, the high heterogeneity commonly existed in carbonate reservoirs makes water flow complicated and performance of water injection differed from reservoir to reservoir. The existence of high permeability stripes and zones would make the problem more complicated and always result water early break through and poor sweep of the reservoir. Water injection pilots st… Show more

“…The reasons behind premature water breakthrough and poor vertical sweep have been extensively discussed, with highpermeability streaks identified as a primary cause (Ghedan, S.,2010;Feng, Q. et al, 2011;Zhang, Q et al, 2016;Liu, L. et al, 2016;Feng D. et al, 2022a). These streaks, often resulting from dissolution processes, can exhibit permeability one or two orders of magnitude higher than the rest of the formation (Balaky S M et al, 2023;Mogensen K et al, 2020;Dewever B et al, 2021;Jun, W et al, 2016;Liu, H et al, 2021).…”

“…Carbonate reservoirs play an essential role in oil and gas recovery, especially in the Middle East and Middle Asia (Liu et al, 2016). Generally, there is a strong heterogeneity in carbonate reservoirs due to the comprehensive impacts of tectonic movement and the leaching effect (Ghafoori et al, 2009;He et al, 2014;Al-Ali et al, 2019).…”
