Finding the Technological Sweet Spot: The Smallholder Conservation Agriculture Maize Seeder

Abstract: The seeder is integral to smallholder agricultural production. This technology seeks to lessen farmer labor requirements, meter seeds accurately, and minimize excessive soil disturbance. Hand seeders play a central role in conservation agriculture (CA) for the smallholder farmer as a means to plant through residue cover and penetrate non-tilled soil surfaces. Two trials in maize (Zea mays, L.) residue and soybean (Glycine max, L.) residue were conducted to test seven seeders of increasing mechanization levels:… Show more

“…Dhillon et al (2017) also noted the ability of the planter to apply mid‐season fertilizer N by simply changing the internal drum. Harman et al (2017) evaluated seven different hand planters based on plant population establishment, economic viability, and usability, and inferred highest qualitative performance using the OSU GreenSeeder.…”

“…Designing a viable planting tool that is durable and efficient requires putting into perspective conditions under which the tool will be used, and understanding the people using them (Friedrich et al, 2009). Furthermore, Harman et al (2017) pointed out that the hand planter development should be gender specific, because women are largely responsible for laborious and manual jobs at crop establishment.…”
