Finding the Reference Set of a Decision Making Unit

Abstract: In this paper we propose a method for finding the reference set of a decision making unit (DMU), without chasing down all alternative optimal solutions of the envelopment form, which is a strong degenerate problem. The reference set is useful as a benchmark for an inefficient DMU, for identifying the status of returns to scale, ranking of DMUs and so on. Lastly, numerical examples are shown to illustrate our proposed approach.

“…To avoid nonlinearity, the present paper only discussed the two-phase NR approach under the assumption that the weights be known a priori. Seventh, it should be noted that finding the reference set and the benchmarks of DMUs is one of the most important issues in the standard DEA which some researchers (such as Jahanshahloo, Shirzadi and Mirdehghan (2008); Krivonozhko, Førsund and Lychev (2012); Mehdiloozad, Mirdehghan, Sahoo and Roshdi (2015)) have focused on.…”

“…The result presents the reference set, which is a set of the most efficient units that can be regarded as benchmarks for inefficient units [44]. The numerical value of an inefficient DMU's input variable multiplied by lambda represents the possibility of improvement.…”

“…Wei et al (2007) and Davtalab-Olyaie et al(2014 proposed some approaches to identify all full dimensional efficient and weak efficient facets of the PPS. Also, Jahanshahloo et al (2008) and Mehdiloozad et al (2015) proposed methods to find the reference sets of DMUs which can identify some characterisations of the PPS.…”
