“Finding Beauty in Everyday Life”: A Photo-Elicitation Study of Play Across the Life Span

Abstract: Play is part of people's lives. Across the life span, play is viewed as central to healthy growth and development, although how individuals play and what play means to them changes with different stages of life. In this qualitative study using photo elicitation, children, college students, and retirees photographed 9 play concepts (connection, creativity, discovery, freedom, fun, growth, inner self, risk, and play as an overarching concept). The thematic analysis showed convergent (each theme within the concep… Show more

“…As Bruner (1983) argued, it is important to address play beyond its ability to facilitate the development of other skills. The fact that only around half of the respondents provided more than an introduction to these three major approaches to play intervention is also of concern, considering the importance of play as an occupation across the life span (Brown, 2009;Bruner, 1983;Erikson, 1972;Foley, 2017;Liapi & Ackermann, 2016;Parham, 1996;Swank et al, 2017;Van Vleet & Feeney, 2015;Vygotsky, 1967;Weider, 2017). Review of the number of hours spent addressing play-related assessment, goalwriting, and intervention approaches, as well as the amount and types of practice and experiential activities provided in entry-level occupational therapy programs is recommended.…”

“…Play permits adults to look at situations differently and can lead to improvements in mood and outlook (Brown, 2009;Liapi & Ackermann, 2016;Van Vleet & Feeney, 2015). In a photo-elicitation study of play in children, college students, and retirees, Swank, Smith-Adcock, and Puig (2017) found themes of connection, creativity, discovery, freedom, fun, growth, inner self, risk, and play across the life span. They concluded that play is important at all ages and stages of life.…”

“…Each family's photographs were sent to them in advance of their interview, to allow them to decide whether there were any pictures they particularly wanted to include or exclude during the interviews. Previous research has asked children to separate pictures representing particular concepts (Swank, Smith-Adcock, & Puig, 2017), or to choose five to 15 photographs that showed something important about their experiences (Pyle, 2013). Participants in the current study were interviewed in their family groups to promote interaction between family members (Creswell, 2007).…”

“…Photo-elicitation (also known as photo interviewing, photovoice, and photo-feedback) is a qualitative research method that integrates photographs into the interviewing process (Shaw, 2013). It has been successfully used in a range of older adult studies (Loeffler, 2018;Swank, Smith-Adcock, & Puig, 2017;Williamson, Lyle, Darton, Griffiths, & Lamb, 2017). I chose to use photo-elicitation to establish rapport and collaboration between older adults and myself (Bignante, 2010;G.…”
