Finasteride is effective for the treatment of central serous chorioretinopathy

Abstract: Purpose To evaluate the safety and efficacy of finasteride treatment in patients with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). Methods Retrospective review of 29 eyes of 23 patients who were treated with finasteride for CSC. Previous medical and ocular history, steroid use, length of finasteride treatment, additional treatments for CSC, visual acuity (VA), central macular thickness (CMT), and presence of subretinal fluid (SRF) throughout the follow-up period, and the occurrence of any complications were recorde… Show more

“…As a whole, these have had poor evidence, including: rifampin, 18 Helicobacter Pylori treatment, 19–21 carbonic anhydrase inhibitors 22,23 , finasteride 24 , beta-blockers, 25 antioxidants, 2628 aspirin. 29 Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists appear to be the most promising of the systemic medications used in the management of CSCR.…”

“…Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) is an acquired idiopathic chorioretinal disorder characterized by exudative detachment of the retina and/or retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) . The first study of finasteride use for treatment of CSCR in women reported no significant change in visual acuity, a modest reduction in macular thickness, and improvement in subretinal fluid levels …”

“…Houve resolução total em 75.9% e recorrência após descontinuação em 37,5% dos casos. (14) Rifampicina oral: o efeito do tratamento oral com rifampicina (300 mg 2 vezes ao dia por 3 meses) na CSC crônica com duração média de 28,4 meses foi investigado por um estudo prospectivo com 14 olhos. Resultou na melhora da acuidade visual, redução da espessura da retina e coroide e resolução total do fluido sub-retiniano em 42,8% e parcial em 64% dos olhos.…”
